A friend has a problem with his front spring

Ok, my friends max is a 1995 and the front spring has started making this terrible clunk noise as he turns the wheel. I looked at it and when the wheel turns, the sping turns as well. What makes the noise is where the sping is supposed to seat at the top, this doesnt move and the spring is sort of grinding round on it. It sounds bad and it causes the car to pull which ever way he last turned due to the spring not seating back into its normal place and acting against the steering. It looks as though the spring and strut assembly is supposed to turn with the steering. Is there some sort of bearing at the top of the strut that may be worn and stopping the plate at the top from turning?? Thanks

His strut bearing is frozen. It's a 20 buck part at Nissan. You have to take the strut out of the car and compress the spring in order to get at it. It sits between the upper spring mount and the strut mount. It allows the upper strut mount and spring assy. to rotate as you turn the wheel.
