5-speed problem in 3rd gear
I drove my friends car and when I had it in 3rd gear at around 3300 rpm under constant acceleration the rpms would jump up to 4000 and come back down. The car didnt feel like it was slipping and felt constant acceleration during this. It just had the clutch replaced the day before and he said it wasnt happening before that. His car as a turbo '95 Talon and he is worried about it...I know this is the maxima forum but I thought someone might have some insight. Thanks.

Diff: maybe going bad
I was test-driving a '92 Max SE a few years ago when the differential puked on an on-ramp.
It was a little wet out and I was accelerating down the ramp in second gear. Just as I was getting into the power band, the revs suddenly jumped up and down. I thought I hit a slick spot so I immediately got off the gas. Then I tried to accelerate again but the car wouldn't. So I coasted (clutch in) to the side of the road. There I put it in first and let out the clutch. The car didn't move an inch but the speedometer indicated that I was moving. I revved the gas in 1st gear but the only thing moving was the speedo needle. Then all-of-a-sudden I smelled a burning stink and there was a strange noise coming from the engine compartment (like a harmonic boo-boo-boo-boo).
So, to make a long story short, the differential let go. The sales guy tried telling me that it was the timing chain. Riiight, buddy, a busted timing chain and the engine is still running? Apparently sales people are not automotive geniuses. We had to wait and get a tow from his dealership.
I don't think a gear-type differential would behave that way. Does his car have a limited-slip? If so, then I'd say differential. Otherwise who knows. Good luck to him.

TOM

sounds to me
like his clutch is slipping...
if he just had it installed yesterday it's obviously not broken in yet...
he should be driving like a grandma for at least the first 500 miles (stop and go miles)...
if he's been beating on it...he probably already destroyed the clutch.
once you glaze the clutch...it's toast.
