Why is it stupid and dangerous? That doesn't make sense... The only thing that I could think of is that you have to disable the clutch starting thingy (which annoys me anyway) I wanted to get a remote start eventually. Not really for any purpose but to have people say it was cool

You "can" do it on a stick..but I wouldnt. Yes, they do make some special for them, but they are much more expensive. I put in my remote start on my auto. Took about 2.5-3 hours. If you put one on a stick because you would have to leave it in neutral every time you shut it off. If you dont the alarm will keep the car from stalling out and it will continue to either lurch forwards or backwards. As you can imagine this is very dangerous. I wouldnt do it to a stick shift...but if thats your cup of tea...you'll probably drink it alone.

I have a 98 5 speed, and soon as I got it I had my buddy instal a Viper 550 with auto start. I am in Chicago, and it's the sh*t in the winter. Some one said it's dangerous, just remember to leave it on nutural and you'll be all set. Good luck.

Guys at the local auto shop said I couldnt put one in my car since too many people had problems with it (just the remote starter). but when i mentioned the more expensive remote starter/alarm combo kits, the guy said those were possible to do. he said they refused to install stand-alone remote starters onto my car because too many people complained about the car not starting, and completely refusing to start because of starter disable conflict with the factory alarm.

I upgraded the stock alarm with an aftermarket one with remote start...but I also kept the stock one activated. I now have 2 alarms running all the time on my car...if you clip the wire for the aftermarket, good luck with the factory one

Just a little added, added security.

Ok, I ALWAYS put my car in neutral when I turn off my car, is that not right? The other day I started my car after someone else drove it the day before and after I started it I released the clutch just to have it lurch forward and kill itself. I am used to it being in neutral.

So why would a remote starter be stupid and dangerous for me?

Because bro, if you leave the car in gear, it will take off. It's gonna start rolling, even if the hand break is on.

If you OWN A 5SPD you ought to know that the moment you release the clutch abruplty ESPECIALLY WITH THE HANDBRAKE UP,the car will stall period. It may jerk forward's an inch or so but that's about it. Now if the handbrake is off and you are on an incline...........call the insuarance agent immediately.

I had one put in my car. I can see all the wiring that had to be spliced into. It's a big job, leave it to the pros. they know exactly what wires to cut into. Also if you have a chipped key like I do on my 99 - you need to buy an additional module and give up a kiy to hide in that module someplace in the car in order for it to start. Thats all part of the security package which you need to bypass.

Does the remote starter come with instructions?
And can you give me some general instructions you followed to install it...if i wouldn't be able to do it myself how much would a mechanic charge to isntall it.

I have a 1997 AUTOMATIC GXE.

thanks.

I think having a remote start in a 5 speed is stupid.

Everyone is forgetful at times. Connections corrode and electronics short circuit. Parking cables break.

Remote starters were *intended* for cars with automatics. If you have one in a 5 speed you had better a) never be forgetful, b) have *really* good insurance, and c) pray that no one I care about ever gets hurt by your ignorance.

Stupid and dangerous.

they have safe ways to do it in a 5spd

on a eagle talon site I was reading, they recommended putting a proximity sensor (basically a magnet and a sensor) on the shift linkage so that it would only provide continuity to the sensor when the car was in neutral; if the car was in gear, it would be either too far forward or backward (depending on which gear you left it in) to trigger the sensor
many remote starts have hood sensors that prevent you from starting the car when the hood is open; the shift sensor could easily be wired in to this (along with the hood sensor with a few diodes) to prevent you from starting it in gear

installing a remote start isn't too bad if you understand basic relays (some applications are on my webpage if you're curious) and basic car wiring; for the 3rd gen, we have 2 starter wires (one is kind of like a cold start wire) that you need to add a relay for but that is pretty easy

Normaly you would be right, but with the remot starts of today they will keep the engine from stalling out. TRUST ME...found that out the hard way when I forgot to tell the dude who's alarm I installed that...came back the next day and said he started his car in front of his house with it while it was in 1st gear and had the hand break up, about a 20 feet later he caught up to his car and got in and stoped it. The car will not stall out. That is why it is dangerous.

Are you asking if putting the car in neutral to park is the "right" thing to do? I would say no. The owner's manual agrees with me, IIRC.

The other day I started my car after someone else drove it the day before and after I started it I released the clutch just to have it lurch forward and kill itself. I am used to it being in neutral.

So why would a remote starter be stupid and dangerous for me?
Did the "someone else" who left the car in gear also set the parking brake? Will "everyone else"?

My cousin is the manager of a local car audio shop and he helped me with the install. I did about 80% of it on my own and it really wasnt hard. My upgraded alarm came with it so I just followed the instructions. If you dont do it yourself, dont go to a mechanic to do it, go to a local car audio shop.

jargoone because you are a newbie and you don't know what the fvck you are talking about.. let me clear a few things up..

#1 the maxima has a neutral switch.. which not many cars do.. which means alarms such as sx7r's are wired to the neutral switch.. meaning the car will not start unless its in neutral.. so 1st.. 2nd.. 3rd.. gear.. it will not start..

let me know if i lost you..

#2 manual drivers have every right to have remote start than auto drivers.. hey it snows where i live.. so i should be forced to go out in the snow to start my car because remote starters are for AUTO's?

#3 before you start attackign respected members of this forum.. PLEASE LEARN TO USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION .. you will refrain from makign an as$ of your self in the future if you do this

Don't worry, I'm following just fine. I didn't know there was a neutral switch. I doubt I'm the only person that didn't know. It still doesn't change my opinion.

Oh, and I used your precious search function. Surprisingly, it actually worked this time, though details on the neutral switch were sketchy at best.

Yes. You made that decision when you purchased a 5 speed. Laziness is not a acceptable reason to threaten the safety of others.

I never attacked anyone. I gave my (informed, mind you) opinion. I'll stick around for a while and post asking about clear corners and intakes. You let me know when my "status" label is high enough to give an opinion again.

nice to see you are still with me.. well there you go.. thats what makes you a newbie.. you didn't know about the neutral switch.. as time goes by you will learn from people who have been here "answering questions about clear corners and intakes" actually have a little bit more knowledge of the inner workings of the maxima..

well you go to vwvortex.com and tell me how their search function works according to ours.. my point is.. it could be worse

sorry if going out in 3 feet of snow to shovel a car and maybe catch the flu is lazy to you.. like i said before.. with the maxima.. the neutral switch enables the saftey of others.. no ones saftey is in danger.. i thought you were following me.. we already covered this..

well if calling someone lazy, ignorant and stupid is informing someone.. then i would love to know the Schools you went to.. i would love to see them informing students on a daily basis.. hey.. if you used the search function.. you won't need to ask questions on intakes and clear corners

sometimes you have to realize that you don't know everything.. and just come to grips with it and admit you were wrong.. YOU WERE WRONG.. its all good.. now move on..

allright, you guys are fighting like afing 5 year olds

newbie, be quiet

and as for the rest of you, and the newbie, springmax is 100% RIGHT

if you look in the repair manual it shows wires that tell the computer whether the car is in neutral or not, so all you have to do is wire the autostart to that, and that's all, the car will not start in any gear but neutral, so even if you forget to put it in neutral, it's all taken care off.

on the personal note
and newbie, we all know each other, this is like a big maxima family, so by saying things like this "But it's stupid and dangerous", or "I think having a remote start in a 5 speed is stupid. " you are insulting us, and that's just not cool.

by saying things like that you're calling everyone w/ a 5 speed and a remote start stupid, and you would be surprised, some of them are extremely knowlegeble (spelling) about maxima

remote start isn't that big a deal if you add a relay to the e-brake to operate. this way your car won't crank and drive off if you accidentally leave it in gear.

the solution (if you haven't fixed it by now) is to wire in a relay to your e-brake so the car won't crank unless it's pulled.

you will have to bypass the clutch safety switch, but that takes about 5 seconds and 1 yellow butt connector.

any more questions, e-mail me. I've been doing this stuff for a while.

I installed a remote starter in my POS Auto (not a Maxima), it took about 2-3 hours and wasn't that hard. I have done a lot of my own stereo work so I was used to working with the wireing. The hardest part is working in and splicing wires in tight spaces, the Max is probably the same. The kit I bought does not have to use engine RPM to tell if the car is running, it cranks the motor for (I think) 1/2 second, then waits and checks the voltage to see if the car is running. It would be a little more difficult to hook up the RPM sensor, but that would be a better way to do it.

What would a Remote start/alarm/keyless entry, cost professionaly installed on a Maxima 5-speed? When I get my Maxima I may get one if it's safe, but I want it professionaly installed.
