Clunking front end and a strut brace

I've got a 96 Max SE (Canadian edition) with a strange problem. I hear a clunkr in the front end when ever I turn the wheel left or right only when I back out of the driveway, and when I turn the wheel to the right, there is a 'clunk/thump' sound from the front. I also hear this if I'm parked and I do any large left/right wheel turns and move the car.

The FAQ came up with nothing, so I'm wondering if this is just the age of the MAX and the tie-rods are showing their age.

Also, if I was to pick up a front strut brace, what is the most common one used?

You need to check your CV joints, look for tears in the rubber boots and grease splattered all around if you find one ripped. Actually, if you find a ripped boot, you might want to have a mechanic inspect the joint/axle for damage.

I have a generic FSTB, looks just like the one from Courtesy Nissan (check the "Links" section for details).

Sounds like a problem I know of. Look uner the wheel well and get someone to turn the wheel. look at the top of the strut and watch the spring. the spring and strut will turn with the wheel. look at the plate at the top where the spring sits. it should turn with the spring. if it doesnt the strut bearing is probably shot. this will cause the plate to lock in one place while the spring will turn and grind against it. I only suggest this because you said that it does it when stationary. let me know if it is the problem or not because ill post how to remove the strut if you need it.

Struts

Thanks for the postings guys. I'll check the FSTB's for these items. As for the struts, they had to tighten one of my front struts last time - is that a known issue if the strut bearing is shot NZ Max?
