Weird idol while stopped

96 SE 5 Speed 192K miles

Recently when I come to a stop my RPMs will return to about 500-600 which is normal but after a few seconds idolling the RPMs will bounce down to about 100. The car will shake then return to a normal idol. This has been happening at every light since Saturday.

I'm not showing any codes. Any suggestions?

What most people say to that question is usually a bad ignition coil pack.
It's hard to tell which one until the CEL comes on according to my mechanic.
I was proposing this:
Could you pull the ebrake up and then set the car in drive or reverse to stimulate load on the car to tests for which coilpack is going bad? I am starting to get really annoyed but my engine *thumps* as well. CEL has not come on.

Newbie here, so don't take my words too srsly. I'm just making a guess.

Possibly a misfire, it may take a while for a code to pop up for it. I had the same thing happen when I had a bad coil pack, so I'd check those.

Are there instructions on how to replace the coils? I've been a member of this forum since it started and for some reason I don't have access to use the search feature

You can free search, but forum search is for donating members only. Surprised you wouldn't know that if you've been here that long. EDIT: Forums were around before 2002, btw.

Coil packs are simply two bolts each, remove, replace.

When I saw, "Weird idol while stopped," I almost was going to recommend an expert in pagan artifacts. :-)

FYI: I got a new screen name when I got a new max.

Should I just wait for a code or should I look more into this now?
