You mean a solenoid?

Pop the shifter trim. Remove the ashtray screw. Pop out the cup holder. That should give you cleaning room.

Two bolts in the back on the sides, pop the shifter trim, one screw fot the cup ash tray
pop that
then 2 more screws at the same spot, carefully lift the console out of place

I put my cupholder in the dishwasher and it came out sparkly clean. Okay, not sparkly but you know. It was nassssty from all the drink drips etc.

The shifter plastic thingy comes out with a little prying of the rear end with your fingers, gently pull it up. It'll expose screws and stuff, just take a look. The posts above will make sense then.

One thing is he can't pop the cupholders out, he has a '95/96 with, presumably, the same era center console (since hasn't done this before). As they've said, just remove the shifter trim, and brake cleaner the **** out of it, maybe put some shop towels down there to soak up the excess that will drip before it evaporates.

live and learn

for once i gotta say the dealer would've been the better choice. the guy i took it to had it from 11:30 till 5:00 and did'nt even have it done yet so i have to wait until tomorrow for the car. what a pain in the ***. the dealer would've probably had it fixed in a half hour, friggin rip off mechanic tryin to make a dollar outta fifty cents...

Ah I don't really know the difference between 95-6 and 97+ 4th gens. My cupholders won't stay in anymore, the clips have long since disappeared. Those things break off so easily. I've take my dash apart more times than I can count.
