Painting the dashboard and pillars

Okay, so a friend of mine decided he wanted to paint his dashboard/pillars. This isn't the weird part, the fact that he did all of this without removing the pieces first is.

He didn't mess up the interior, and everything looks pretty good.

This got me interested in doing the same thing.

Do I have to remove all the pieces before painting? Or just tape off the areas I don't want just in case, and start painting?

what color are you going to paint it? If you're painting it a bright color or something don't. I don't think it's rice if its done nicly and not crazy paint. I dont think mine is rice at all. Not sure why you would think about not taking the pieces out....

Just black.

If the only real problem with not disassembling before painting is having a car that smells of paint, then i'm not going through a 2 hour disassembly. I'll just get the smell out by leaving the windows open and driving to orlando or something lol.

Would you guys recomend a particular type of paint?

I was totally looking through the classifieds and remembered to post this.
As soon as I post it I realize I posted it in the classifieds section.

I felt like I had just locked and shut the door to my car and as im watching the door close I see the keys inside lol. That feeling of helpless stupidity!

bad idea. You don't have to listan but it should be common sense not to spray paint inside your car....get SEM paint. Btw, it's going to look like **** since you are lazy and won't take it out of the car.

If done RIGHT it should come out good, so listen to what everyone is saying and don't do what your friend did. If you really want to paint it, you should remove it so that you can clean it well before painting it.

plus taking it out will allow you to more easily get the edges which otherwise might be difficult. taking it out also lets you lay the pieces flat so if you put on too much paint it wont run.

just take the time, take the pieces. it will look much nicer. your car is something youll have for a long time (hopefully!) and something youll have to look at everyday so do it right the first time.

So, since you are thinking of painting the dash in black, I hope you will be thinking of swamping the door panels as well??? IMO beige door panels will not look good with a black dash

So Its not a bad idea to paint the dashboard without removing it?

How would I remove the dashboard if it would be better to?

ok well my honest opinion on the situation is not to do it. My guess is you have a tan interior? Other wise you will be painting a black dash some other color that will be rice. I thought you were painting dash pieces so I couldn't understand why you wouldnt take them out. If you really want to paint it I would just start saving to overhaul the interior to black because a new color dash and all other stock pieces will be another color. That looks terrible IMO. So more details would be nice about colors and what you really want. In general, I still wouldn't paint the dash in the car but thats just me.

so you're already running black seats in a tan interior? Hmm not nice IMO. Do what ever you want.

if you want all the answers to disassembly then get a manual. It'll have it all in there. And again, make a choice. It's your car do what you want. But yes if you paint inside tape everything. Absolutely everything. Or take the time and take it out. Should be a 2 hour job or so.

^^^^^Exactly. Either cough up $18 and buy yourself a Haynes at your local autoparts store, or download the FSM for free and go to town. No one is going to explain how to remove an entire dashboard STEP BY STEP.

Haha. Honestly, I suggest not painting it, but I mean you put the seats in so you might as well. Get a manual, it will help alot. For everything. (I don't mean one for your training either, just the maxima :P).

i had a all tan interior when i bought my car, pulled the dash out along with every other peice from my interior, had the seats reupholstered new black carpet and and sanded and painted everything black and put blue inserts in my seats and painted the dash peices blue how is this ricy, and what i don't get is everytime you say something on this forum about changing your car people will say it's ricy, wtf, how is making a nice car a badass car people will look at and say damn thats bad alot of work went into that or even making a show car ricy, almost everyone on here is so obsessed with the word ricy it's driving me crazy, wtf do you clasify as ricy, anything a honda has? well i have a bodykit, wheels, carbonhood, fenders, headlights, redone interior and motor work... am i a RIIIIIICCCCCCYYYY person for having this, it's like you cant say anything on this forum untill your car is done so people won't call you ricers, i seen a max on cardoamin that was bagged, had a wing, carbon tails, ect, things people on here will call ricy and it is the best lookin max i've seen in awhile you prolly seen it b4 and he is prolly on here somewhere, here is the page...

Sorry, I just kept asking the same questions and nobody was giving me a straight answer!

Didnt mean to postwhore.

And I didnt know that dashboard disassembly was in the manual!

And jvckustumz, they may call you ricey but they also tell you not to listen to what people on the forums have to say about you doing your car, because its your car and you do what makes you happy.

My favorite color is neon green, was since I was 8 years old. When I was 14 I got my hair dyed neon green and haven't had it any other way since. I stated I wanted to paint my car neon green but they told me it was ricey. I made my own decision [with very little influence from the forum] to keep my car the stock color. But the forum didnt stop me from getting black and neon green seats, and its not gonna stop me from getting a "ricey" R33 body kit. Or an inexpensive yet flashy exhaust [i would get a stillen but I seriously lack the cash and i'd rather get a warpspeed Y pipe and a ricey exhaust]. Its your car, the forum members just are lookin out for ya

you guys have to understand that it's personal preference. Lot of guys come in saying they like r33 kits and all and just get flamed because 95% of this forum hates rice. It just looks awful and people just rank on your car non stop. Most of that other 5% change their minds later and realize what they have on their car looks terrible. Again, do what you want, but I wouldn't recommend sharing what you put on your car or pics of your car because you will be upset with the feedback.

Exactly.
And the more and more I go on these forums the more and more I realize how crappy the R33 kit looks.

Why dont you just buy vinal and wrap the pieces?
if you do paint them remove them to be safe.
