Bad Fuel Pressure Regulator?
Bad Fuel Pressure Regulator?
So I have searched the forum looking for a similar problem and didnt seem to locate a previous thread about this topic.
About 2 weeks ago I noticed my car having difficulty starting after sitting for 6-8 hours, such as first thing in the morning and after work. I figured it could be 1 of 2 things, Engine not getting fuel or the battery. Well the battery is only 2 years old so that gets checked off. Second is the fuel system. I checked the resistance on the fuel pump and it was reading .5 ohms, figured that is working just fine. After all, the fuel pump is either working or it isn't, right? Next I checked the pressure in the fuel line between the fuel filter and the Fuel Pressure Regulator. I installed a T-fitting and attached a pressure guage using another piece of 1/4 fuel line. The guage was reading 30 PSI with the car running, so I figured it wasn't the pump, because both the pressure and the resistance was good. After letting the car sit for a few hours and checking the guage the pressure was close to 0 PSI, but again, once ignition is turn "ON" pressure jumps to 30 again.
So now I figured it is the Fuel Pressure Regulator that is bad or failing. Are there ways to check the FPR to see if it is bad before replacing? Also, any tips on removing that thing!? Looks like a PITA becuase of the throttlebody being in the way. Thanks for your help. Also, once I get this fixed I am probably going to post it in the classifieds. Sad to see my 2nd Max go, but must make way for new vehicle.

Stock fp is 34 so you might have a pressure leak somewhere. If you remove the gas tank cover when you fill up and don't hear the suction sound you are loisng pressure somewhere. Make sure there are no gas smells under the hood that would indicate a dry rot in one of the fuel hoses or something. If the car runs kinda rich you might have a bad injector seal. Just a few things to check.
Thanks for the reply. Typically I do notice suction in the tank upon fill-up. And no noticable gasoline odors under the hood. The 30 PSI was a rough estimate given the gauge reads in 6PSI incraments and starts at 10 PSI and goes up to 120PSI. I would venture to say the pressure is right around 33-37PSI. So you think it would be an injector seal before the FPR? Thanks for your help
