Steering wheel vibrations over 70mph

I used to have a lot of vibration in steering wheel when going over 70 mph on most highways. I could actually see the steering wheel vibrate a lot and it was hard to keep your hand on it because it felt like you have parkinson lol.
I balanced the tires with no results.
I had to replace my suspension anyway because the car has 195k,

So I bought a Tokico HP struts/springs kit , Tokico strut mounts, Control Arms/inner & outer tie rods/sway bar end links / sway bar bushings.

I got it installed in a shop, so when I looked at my old control arms they looked like **** , the ball joints were swinging around and all the other parts looked bad.

I got an alignment and drove 85 miles from Brooklyn NY to Connecticut.
The car feels like brand new in terms of suspension but I still have some vibration over 65mph, and almost no vibration at 80mph.

I usually drive on the same highway on my wife's 06 Corolla and I can feel some very slight vibration in steering wheel because I95 and CT 8 North sucks
but on the Maxima I definitely have more vibration than on Corolla now, even after the new suspension.

May be the steering column bolts should be tightened ? Because I feel vibration in my steering wheel when the car stands in D. (My friends 95 maxima is not doing it and his car is poorly maintained).

I'm thinking to swap the rear tires to the front but the thing is, two of the rears are different brands and one has about 80% thread left and the other one around 70%.

I'm so pissed off now because after all the repairs it still vibrates (not as much but still...) I don't know what to do.

i had the same issue, but all i did was rotate the wheels and replace the rear tires, used to be the front ones. now there is virtually no virations. like a brand new car. i jus got used tires too.

I had this once, only happened when I hit 75+ mph, and rotating tires fixed it.......
Of course, there might be other causes....

Yeah I realy hope you wanted to replace all that stuff because the first thing to do is not a sume there is a problem with the car (it's a Max) but start with the basics then move to more complicated repairs. I have had that before not only on my max but also my classic SE-R with 206000 on it. I balanced the tires and it was fine. when you rotate your tires you are probubly just putting the tires that were originally balanced and put on the front. So I would balance them.

Hey bro, glad to hear that you're done with the suspension work. Try to get those suckers re-balanced and rotated. I think i'm getting some vibration over 70-75MPH too, unfortunately i don't drive enough highway to really notice.

I had the same issue but it was the front right rim (which was ****ed last winter) caused it. I just rotated the tires and problem fixed. Get them Rotated & balanced like others said and if it doesn't stop the vibrations, then you're stuck with driving under 65mph or over 80mph

It could be one of 3 things, you need to make sure that your rims arent warped or damaged, you need an alignment, and you need to replace either the front or rear tires. My recommendation would be to go to Town Fair Tire they are the best and they will hook you up with something nice depending on your needs.

Thanks Bro,

My front wheels are balanced and I had an alignment done.
My question is : Two of the rear tires are different brands and one has about 80% thread left, and the other one around 70% with some uneven wear on the edge(I got it used). Can I still put my rear tires to the front ?

you can do whatever you like , but if you're saying that there's uneven wear on those tires, then it might not be the best idea to put those in the front. I dunno man, i broke the bank and got new tires after the suspension work(i'm not suggesting that you should spend any MORE money) The rule of tumb is that you have to pick two tires that are most identical and put them in the front (which is what you've done as far as i can tell).

Sounds like tires. Uneven wear or out of round most likely I would replace all tires with good tires.

So if my front tires are the problem (belts shifted or something), then would inflating tires over the spec (or deflating) would help with vibrations ?

Or may be removing the tires from the rims and remounting /rebalancing would help ?

My max was doing it at about 65, and what it was, is i had a slightly bent rim on the front. it was on the inside so i couldnt see the rim until i took it off, to check my rotor i seen it, put it on the back and has been fine ever since.

What kind of rims do you have ? GLE alloys or regular GXE rims ?
I have GLE rims, and I don't think this rim can be bent

It's either warped rims or the tires.

Problem Solved !

I did a high speed balance and there is no vibration any more.
The right front tire was not balanced (even though it was balanced on a regular machine a month ago) and the rear tires were out of balance.

My vibrations come at about the same speed except they also go away. Seems like every 15 seconds or 1/4 of a mile my watch wants to vibrate off my wrist.

New tires up front. Fairly new in the back. Just balanced. Rims seem decent. Did notice a passenger side torsion bar boot was cracked in two pieces just under where the air conditioner drips water.

Did you do a "high speed balance" ?
