It doesn't give you horsepower, no. No oil gives you horsepower.

EDIT: This isn't even a 4th gen question, belongs in General or, even better, the aptly named Fluids and Lubricants section.

Less friction=More horsepower. If it decreases friction, then its actually giving you more horsepower.

its not so much adding horsepower as allowing your engine to perform to its full potential.

As BLACKonBLACK98 said, it 'frees up' lost horsepower.

As I said in my original post, no oil will add horsepower.

noob question.
pmohr is right. and if you search a little bit you will find dyno's proving that it has helped put out more horsepower on certain applications. Now are you going to feel 4 horsepower though? I would think cold weather will give you more hp than that.

the real question is, does it matter? are you saying in your mind "i run royal purple I must be putting out 194 crank horsepower now" ?

I think so... the cold weather would give more horsepower to you.
Just buy syn oil with a good filter.

I never bought into this synthetic oil craze, but that's just me. Btw, this belongs in the fluids and lubricants section.

I’ve seen it been proven on those weekend morning mullet shows. Maybe they’re paid ‘under the table’ to advertise for them. The theory is legit, but has anyone done back to back dynos? Not here. Would I buy it, no. Not because I didn’t think it was possible, or even true, but I would rather stick to my Castrol synthetic. Maybe if you were some sort of dyno queen you might see some gain. Perhaps just use 5W-30 next time you change your oil.

fact is that 9 horsepower is nothing... what i mean by that is that ur car looses power.. its not like that motor puts out 190 horsepower all the time.. 9 horsepower is the tolerance in this case... one day the car will do 190 a couple of hours later it will do 180...

This theory is bull****... .the only way that it would be true is if they kept the variables identical.. meaning they had the temperature and humidity constant before and after the oil change...

they would also have to run the car and get an average value before and after..

point is that i take a dump which lightens me up a little and the car goes a little faster.. maybe thats what the hill billy did when he tested it...

It's true. While I'm sure Royal Purple chose the most extreme example possible (say, going from a heavy dino oil to a very thin, low friction synthetic) it is not a lie. Racing Beat, a longtime rotary engine developer in the racing world, found a 2% HP increase by running the Royal Purple racing oil instead of their previous synthetic.

Whether it holds true for all engines, or is worth paying $9/qt or whatever it costs, or whether there are additional wear tradeoffs is much harder to determine.

I use Mobil1 High Mileage because it's $4.50/qt when you buy the 5qt jugs at Wal-mart. The more expensive oils just don't add up for me.

without getting into a huge oil debate (i know some people get reallly critical about **** like this) what is the difference between standard oil 10w-30 and the high mileage stuff your using?

and btw i may have a manual core within teh next couple months...the tranny is low on fluid/making noises so i might buy a new one.

I think the high mileage just has a few extra additives and anti-leaking stuff.

PM me with the info on the core. At the moment I don't need any but that could change.

I have felt some increase in acceleration in my 02 quest after a royal purple oil change. Not that important unless you want all you can get. My question is can it be good for a maxima with 265,000 miles? Or is it too thin? I use penzoil 10-30 right now.
