True?

Ok, I have been told by several people that 99's made after a certain month are actually 5th gens. Is this true? I think mine is a 10th month 99. I have had all sorts of mechanics tell me this. So will engine/exterior parts fit on my car without a problem? I don't think it would be a problem, but I just want to make sure before buying all of my parts.

Thanks alot for any information you can provide me with. I couldn't find information on this anywhere. Thanks once again.

well you surely arn't going to be able to fit 5th gen parts on a 4th gen body trim. that goes the same way with most interior parts.

No DE-K, no 5th gen, regardless of what people say. You may 'consider yourself' a 5th gen, but if you have an A32 chassis, you're a 4th gen. Really as simple as that.

Thats what I'm thinking. (The 99.5 thing), I'm sure 4th gen parts will fit. I didn't think 5th gen parts would fit. So just go ahead and order the parts I need then? Or call up my Nissan dealer? Just to make sure.

Any 5th gen parts will fit your car, with a little customization.

Just order parts for a '99, and you'll be fine.

Exactly what parts were you asking about, anyway?

There has been some speculation that the 99.5's had similar ECU's as the A33. That's probably where this is coming from.

I'm am not trying to be a D**k, so don't misunderstand. It is true to a point, because car makers do release new models somewhere in the middle of the years, but the 99-00 was the changeover, so here are the straight to the point ways to tell you what years' parts to order (Gen)
If your car resembles this:

Its a 5th gen. (00-03)

If it resembles this:

...Its a 4th gen. (the versions pictured is 97-99, the 95-96's had small differences cosmetically and are also 4th gens, but do not pertain to your question) Yes there is the 99.5 SE-L I guess, but is basically the 4th gen, just some cosmetic specialties that I will not list because not necessary.)

4th gen engine was this the VQ30DE: (aluminum intake manifold-not variable)

Like stated earlier, some parts swap, others with some modifications. Just depends on how much customization you want to do, or how much money you have.

By the pics above, you should be able to decide what Generation you car is. When I was still new to the Maxima world, many moons ago. The headlight/ tail light style was the easiest for me to identify the difference in the 4th to 5th Gen. until I became more familiar to the cars...then I bought a few.

Don't worry, I don't think you are a d**k at all. I'm not misunderstanding something, I thought it was a 4th gen, I was just making sure because all the mechanics seemed so sure of themselves. I was wondering about Stillen Race Pipes, they take out the cat converter (Illegal unless racing) and the mechanics said that mine cant have it done because it was a 10 month, only the ones before the certain could. But I thought that was crap, so I had to ask people who actually know about maximas.

Thanks alot for all the help!

Some mechanics make me sad, almost to the point of crying.

Now that we've cleared that generation issue up, what is it that you are trying to do to your car?

Take off my stock exhaust system and replace it with the Stillen Race pipes (y pipe), and new muffler, or should I go with a different system? I have been looking at warpspeed and some others. I'm not sure what would be best for my car. I'm going full out on it, show/performance and I got the audio already fully covered.

The y-pipe is my first performance upgrade and I want to do it right.

Thanks for any help!

The y-pipe is debatable as far as which one you go with. But as car as the rest goes. I would get a Cattman b pipe, and a 5th gen rear section (muffler).

If you're going full on, then buy these instead of fooling around with non equal y-pipes. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=542464

just to add....techincally the 99 SE-L is a 99.5 or what some people consider the early 2000's just because of the release date..date or no date its still the 4th gen...

Concerning the y-pipe, first you need to check to see if you are federall emmisions or california spec. If you are cali-spec than getting rid of the pre-cats also requires replacing the front exhaust manifold and using o2 simulators. If you are cali-spec you can use a regular stock 4th gen front manifold, or you can replace both of your manifolds with headers like nmex suggested, but ask him for the runfiles that show headers on a 4th gen are worth the insane amount of work required for the rear one, not to mention the expense of the headers themselves. You will gain barely anything over the standard fed-spec conversion and aftermarket y-pipe.
