DYI Red Taillights

DYI Red Taillights
Here is what you need to red out the amber part of your taillight. Its cheap and easy to do. I did about 3 coats. Remember after it dries it will get a slight bit darker.
What you need is Tamiya Model paint for plastics. Color is TS-74 Clear Red. I picked mine up awhile ago at a Hobby store where they sell R/C cars. I think it was around $5-$10.
I just left the lights in the car and taped up the bottom and had my trunk open. What you see is me painting only the amber part. The match is pretty good.

cool, should be added to the exterior modifications sticky, i think the other post in there about this uses some sort of tape but I think its better to paint them, if you dont have a hobby shop near you, you can go to wal-mart (i believe) and get #1605 testors transparent candy apple red spray enamel. only thing i would change is to take the lights off when you do them so you dont get (the) runs if you put it on a touch to thick, and i would coat them with a clear coat after, i've just found it looks a little better with some clear coat.

I don't think it looks that bad. You are right though, it is your opinion, and you are entitled to it, I ain't hatin' on you for it.
Its not a bad option for those unhappy with their 95-96 tails. Its always nice to have a few options. Heck if anything, you are given a number that may match your red on the tails pretty good.
A closer, clearer picture would be better for referencing purposes though, in all honesty.

maxima985spd, do you have any close ups of the vinyl, is it noticeable that its vinyl(ie ridges along edges)? i've never used it before as i worry it would start to peel after a while from washing and heating up in the sun etc, have you had any problems with it?

I fail to see how these are ugly. Sure there's better looking tail lights out there, but these are just a low cost option for those of us w/ 95/96'. Some of us have no options since the all clears are not available anymore, and any aftermarket tail lights that are available are ****ing hideous. I'm sorry that not all of us care, or can afford to do a 97+ conversion.
So yeah, please excuse us for getting rid of the ugly amber rear signals in an inexpensive way.

Wow. Thats kinda weird looking IMO/ Shame cause I absolutely love the Red/Clears on the 95-96. Dont know why but I like them more than the 97+ Red/Clears. Either way I guess if you were bored wih yours.....the vinyl woulda been a good move though.

I agree red clears on a 95/96 are better than 97-99 red clears

Well after the crash I think a lot of the stuff is down, but there is a way to fix the threads, I'm not sure if it applies to the links in the threads though. In the URL change the part that says "showthread" to "oldthread" and it'll take you there.

Sorry, no close ups. You can't tell that there is vinyl on the lights and they tolerate weather and power washes very well. I had them for about two years and they didn't show any signs of peeling...

paint the white lights red also to completely match those white lights just pop out so much on the top I know they wont pass inspection but it would nice solid red all around. Or just switch to 97-99 that is the best the 99's with black outline look the most modern and cleanest

Well, I know I'm not the first or the last. I just wanted to show people who wanted to do something different. I personally didn't do vinyl because the gloss wasn't there and it looked like there is something on top of my lights. I have done vinyl in the past and painted all types of lights in different colors i.e. blacked out, smoked, amber, red, etc. and this was the closest I got to stock color which looked decent and was translucent and lasted. I just thought I'd share it.
