illegal to take off muffler?

is it illegal? or is it just the emissions test? or does it even do anyting for emissions, except quiet down the car?

Why do you want to do that?

I don't think the muffler does anything but quiet the car down. I wouldn't think it would be illegal unless your car is louder than the law allows but i am not sure.

the muffles does nothing for emmissions, it just helps reduce exhaust noise.
why would you want to remove your muffler anyways? if you are looking for better performance there are free flowing exhaust that can be installed

Depending on your location it most likely is illegal. To be honest, the flow of the muffler is not where much of the restriction of the exhaust flow is. If you do remove it...have fun with the tickets.

I think it would be illegal but im not sure. lol this one time, i was following my uncle in his '89 buick, and his muffler fell off halfway home! and like, he would press the gas a little and it would sound like a fockin mustang with flow masters!! it was soooo funny, but thats off topic. maybe you should try buying a stock muffler and putting that on? because, compared to aftermarket ones, theyre quieter.

No muffler i think is gay. what do you have just a pipe coming out the back of your car?... i think that would look gay on a new nice car like a max. without the muff it would look cheap, just my opinion, do sh*t right, not stupid.

i dont have one

heres what i did, i took it off and put a gap between the muffler and the pipe. Still sounds loud AND looks stock.

2 reasons to not do this i have found out by experience:

1.) The muffler helps to hold the exhaust pipe in place, without it, the pipe sags and looks really bad.

2.) The bolts will not work if the threads get damaged, duh, but i didnt realize my threads were getting damaged. My muffler was just resting back there b/c i didnt know the law and it chewed up my threads so now it wont go all the way back on.

I'm not sure whether taking off your muffler is illegal. But I'm 90% sure that the sound this generate is illegal (90% because I've never heard the sound)
remember in a mag (SSC or superstreet....), they interviewed a cop and actually let him inspect those mod car, and the officer said something like "....it may be smog legal, but it may not be sound legal...." forgot at what level of the sound is illegal. 90 d.b.???

Re: i dont have one

i have straight pipes from my cat and bback and they dont sag....when u take ur muffler off u need to remember to use the stock muffler hangers to hodl the pipe from those......all i did was weld a rod onto the pipe then i bent it to fit in the muffler hanger that was already on the car......and they dont sag at all.......
