converts to HID + retro projectors . . . i got some questions

so i just got a 05 altima and already kitted it with 6k HIDs in the heads and fogs. the fogs don't have a refractor or anything so the light doesn't really shine like it should. i know 4gen guys go nuts on the retro fits and HIDs so i was wondering if you could answer some ?s for me

1. does projectors even make a difference in a fog light set up? anyone ever done it?

2. does the actual projector you get make a difference? like is there poor output in some, and better in others? and how does size affect the output?

3. i've read some write ups and sh it but is it really that simple? i already have an extra set of lamps so i'm not worried about fuc kin anything up.

thanks for all the help guys

1. If you get the right projectors they will make a world of difference, however you'll need to aim them correctly especially if they're HID projectors or you will wind up horribly blinding everyone.

2. Simple answer: yes, very much so. It's been said that a larger projector will theoretically give more output but really size doesn't matter as much as design.

3. It is that simple. I've only done it once, it took me a weekend. Just bear in mind that you will have to secure them down and aim them somehow, and don't do anything ****headed. Use screws to secure it in a way that it won't move, and make sure everything's as it needs to be before sealing it up. Aiming and positioning is very important; test it before you do anything permanent and use common sense.

The last thing that should be said (or rather reiterated)... if you're going to put HID projectors in your fogs you're probably going to want to aim them so they light up the road. PLEASE don't do this. That would require aiming them almost straight out instead of at a downward angle and will put god knows how many lumens of 4300K light into oncoming driver's eyes whenever you hit the slightest bump or crest. Aim them properly if you're going to do this--they aren't supposed to be headlights.

good one. wow i feel the burn. now that you mention it why the hell did i just upgrade from a 10 yr old car to a 2 yr old car. i loved the max. that's why i stayed with nissan. i just couldn't afford a 07 and i'm not a fan of the older 6gens.

so next question is where does everyone on the org get them? and what are quality projectors and how do you know if it is?

You need to measure and see how much space you have there man. The you can find a projector from that.

ok so i need to measure. here is the thing -does the projector need to be covered, or can it be exposed? like could i just get a proj that fits the hole for my fog and then just find a way to mount it, or do i have to find something that will fit into my fog light. ****ty thing is the fog light is not that big and the hole is even smaller. anyway i'll try to figure sh it out

most if not all need to be protected from the elements . There are a few that can be exposed but them are pricey. You want to try to find one thatll fit in there to cover it and protect it.

Hmmm I wonder if your headlight housings are big enough to fit the Q45 projectors. Those would look pretty sick!!!!!!

I got my A6 prjectors from the Classifieds Forums ... the mate I bought them from I think put in TSX's in place. Gotta ask Man to know for sure. I like the A6 because they were easy to mod for my install and they are Bi-Xenon (hi / low beams). As for fogs ... not sure but you can get specs from HIDplanet.com (IIRC)

I mean there have been a couple retros with them but the only draw back is the size. Even tho they are huge they dont have great output. The tsx will outshine the q45 and they arent the best single xenon out.

ok so i'm pretty much askin the simplest questions - but what makes a proj better than another? i mean obviosuly design, but is there a way to tell, or just go off feed back for quality. i would assume like anything high end - (lexus/ bmw/ benz etc) would be really good. true?

To me it's a matter of personal taste. I don't know that "one" is the best or worst. I do think that the output is different from one to another. But it only makes sense that the better projectors are like the TSX and have a closed sidewall. I used metal tape on my A6 proj's and it keeps the light in, but I feel that a better design (like the TSX) would do a better job at directing the light.

One of us should poll the ORG and see who has projectors, what kind, and have they tried anything else? I know a couple mates on here have changed or "upgraded" theirs over time, would be nice to know who exactly and what they feel the difference is.

Cheers mate!

Very untrue. There are output differences between all projectors.

To anyone wondering about "retrofitting" you need to go here to really understand/see some projectors.

http://http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/index.php

I would start with the Hid Plant University Forum. You will have to register for free to look into any of the Forums. I would deffinately start with at least looking at each of the sticky's. Hopefully you find what you need.

1. Well, I retro'd my fogs with 04 maxima H3 projectors but those are only halogens. But to answer your question...yes, they are definately brighter and the look sick too.

2. Well yeah but not as much as HID projectors would...light output is directed more with a projector and since they sit so close to the lens of the fog they look lik little circles.

3. They are time consuming to measure, cut, recut, grind and make sure they're level...but as far as wiring its basically plug and play. see pic.
