What is your gas Mileage?
24.5- 26.5 mpg on Premium, 5 spd. se, driving like I stole it at least once a day. No codes, new knock sensor, look in the stickies to find info on various sensors and tune up stuff you may want to do.
That is really poor mileage, ecu is probably retarding the timing (bad knock sensor) for starters.

Sorry, my mods and etc.: K&N Filter in stock box, intake resonator removed, 5th gen. clutch, Fidanza lightweight flywheel, new NGK Iridium IX plugs, pcv oil catch, all fluids changed at 160,000 miles, TB cleaned, IACV taken apart and cleaned, new Fuel Filter, new idler pulley, new knock sensor, AMS Oil Synthetic transaxle fluid, Valvoline Dura Blend 5w 30.
I would start with NGK Spark Plugs (copper or iridium), New air filter, new knock sensor, check for any rolling resistance like sticky calipers or stuck parking brake, change all your fluids.
your knock sensor code is being thrown? that will steal a couple miles per gallon right there..not because your car is consuming more on a static level, but you overcompensate on the pedal because of the weak pull in low end 2nd and 3rd gears. you end up consuming more gas for the same performance.
In my '97 I have averaged 23-25 mpg city stop and go (fast) traffic and about 27-29 mpg on the highway. I generally get about 360+ miles to a take in the winter and about 330 miles in the summer (nothing works well when its 110 degrees). Used only Chevron 91 octane.
No mods, 5-speed MT, Bridgestone Potenza RE950 (tires made a difference), K&N Filter.

Ya, minimalmaxima, I usually stop for gas when the light comes on and I usually put about 15-16 gallons in to fill her up.
15 gallons @ 23 mpg = 345 miles.
I keep a log of my fuel usage and have tracked my fuel economy ever since I got the car and over the life of the car (now at 145K) I have averaged 23.95 mpg-averaging 373.86 miles to a tank @ 15.61 gal per tank. In fact, over the last couple of years with the car my gas mileage has been going up (right now I'm averaging nearly 25 mpg).
And yes, a little ****, but with the rising price of gas, it's good to know where all my money is going.

so i just did quite a bit of driving this past weekend. drove from home to chicago and back on less than a full tank.
370 miles and filled up w/ 14.8 gallons 89 octane ~> 25mpg.
not bad for a 5spd,and this is the best mpg i've seen for a while. if it's all city driving i'm closer to 20mpg.
and i have a jwt ecu so i should be using 91+ octane, but if i know i'm going to be cruising a lot of highway i fill up on the lower octane and make a conscious effort to not make the car go into open loop.
what i don't get is how some 5spd guys are getting upwards of 29 mpg on the highway?
what i would give to get those numbers.

Pretty simple really. North American cars are geared for the best gas mileage at 55 mph per EPA testing standards. You lose approx. 2% mpg for every mile per hour over. I beleive the EPA numbers are around 30mpg highway for both tranny's constant load 0% grade.
I still manage between 28-30 mpg 5 spd. going 70mph (3050 RPM) highway only trips. Any faster and it starts to decline exponentially.
There are so many possible parasitic effeciency losses, enough of them add up to cause dismal mileage. When I bought the car, the first tank I checked mileage was 19.6 mpg on 87 octane. I was driving to get good mileage too.
oh god, you guys are getting some serious mileage. I got 197 miles when the empty light came on. and thats on 89. The best I had was 260, and that was 50 50 highway city.
Mods are, injen CAI with new KN cone filter, straight through cat and "racing" exhaust.
I finally got my radiator support from world parts, waiting on an ebai knock sensor, and then getting everything done.
What kind of spark plugs do you guys recommend? And would it result in better mpg?
I also need a new pair of tires for the front. The backs are new general exclaim uhps, I am considering contiextremes for the front.
Here is what I am getting done next week...
Rear motor mount (cracked)
Radiator support (rustproofing first)
new undershields
Knock sensor
Seafoam
cleaning out the IACV, throttle body, Intake manifold, Lower intake manifold, new injectors (Recommendations please?), clean fuel rails and the egr.
Did i miss anything?

I actually have the bad Bosch Quad plugs that everyone says are no good. I check them a few months ago and they doing just fine (they have about 40k on them). I am thinking of going with so good NGK's though. Anyway, tires are the big thing in fuel economy. That make a world of difference. Tire are the one element of a car you should not cheap out on. So check your tires if any of you are getting real bad gas mileage.
idk my mileage but its not good lol. i have 419k on my engine. 96 5spd. the CEl was on for like 2 years before we got the car and it went away one day. i think the bulb blew so i dont know whuts wrong. gonna get the codes checked soon. but yeh what can u expect from 419k lol.

Brotha, I am impressed.

go with NGK platinum or NGK iridium plugs (or copper if you broke). u can get them off the web at like 10 bux a piece. if you buy locally expect to be paying 15+.
also, i didnt see fuel filter on your list.
got a 99 se limited about as bone stock as you can get right now. got over 200,000 miles. getting about 18 and 21 mpg. a good easy thing o check that can affect your mileage is your air filter. you can lose mileage from a dirty one, and it is usually overlooked.
96 stock manual and since I've had the car in June '05 my normal mixed driving is always btwn. 24.5 and 25.5mpg. Highway only driving I get btwn 28 and 30.5 mpg cruising at 75. I've been using ngk iridiums tho I just switched to some 'experimental plugs' on my last tank. I got my ngk's on ebay for ~$35 shipped so check there too for deals. I've done all the usual maintenance; car's about to tip 190k.
If you've got a bad knock sensor please change it! My mileage dropped from ~25 down to ~23 that may not seem like a lot but add it up you'll be saving yourself some more money for mods down the road if you take care of it now.
**edit: oh and I try to keep my tires inflated to 34/32psi

I am getting 26 - 30 on a bone-stock '98. I pay attention to how I drive and try to keep my testosterone in check. If you let off the throttle and coast to stop signs and lights that are red, you will be amazed at how much fuel you save. The car will coast darn near close to speed. I also shut the car off at lights and other situations where I will sit for longer than 10 seconds. That is when I get up around the 30 mpg mark. I also have a knock sensor code and am changing that today. I was told that a bad KS actually hurts your mileage so I am looking forward to my new mileage. I will keep you posted after a week or two with the new KS.
umm. i guess im lucky or something cause all i ever get is 400 to a tank... i drive her till the light turns on then put vpower premium back in. just bought it but yeah, did the full synthetic oil change... and changed my plugs... its pretty much all city driving witha few highway trips per tank, maybe one or two... but yeah, mines a 96 max 5spd. nothing else done...

Gas Mileage
Last year, I drove from the bottom of Maryland (Lexington Park) to Myrtle Beach, SC. That was 460 miles according to my trip odometer before I gassed up. Yes, the idiot light was on but I got there.
Keep in mind that I was using the cruise and did it down I-95 through VA at 67mph and all the way through NC doing around 82mph.
Not sure if I used the A/C or not but probably not. I guess that is between 25-26 mpg...?

I bought my 95 brand new in 95 and for the first 6 years averaged 17-20MPG
this was strictly city driving and a very short 1/2 mile commute to work. the dang thing never got warm .
it is now 2007 and my max has 55k miles and in a city/hwy mixed commute I am now getting 22-25MPG this is pure stock with the original factory spark plugs.
I have changed a part for the 1008 code and also my KS in the last couple years. other then that just routine oil changes and other they get old parts.

97 SE 5spd custom CAI and exhaust took a trip to myrtle beach from Knoxville and still had a little bit of gas left running 80mph + the whole way.
467 miles to the tank i think i have what an 18 gal tank?
Oh forgot 120k miles on car.

I wish I could get 30+, I don't know how you guys do it unless your 300 mile trip is down the side of a mountain. My best has been just over 27 MPG highway, 97 SE 5-spd no codes, just an exhaust system. Usually I get 21-23 in the city and 23-26ish on the highway, depends on traffic and whether I'm in the mood to go 75 or 95. I'm happy with my mileage. Oh and I use regular gas (87)

I just picked up a 96 Maxima 5 speed on Friday. My first fill up, the Maxima is getting 28.1 mpg (stock) on 87 octane. Highway speeds of around 75-80 mph for most of the trip. Front tire pressure @ 31 psi, rear tire pressure @ 29 psi. I'll be doing some maintenance things on the car over the next few weeks so I'm sure I can get it to 30 mpg, considering the 28 mpg is on winter gas. I was only expecting 26-27 mpg but 28 was a surprise.
my average is around 18-20 MPG now, but trips are less than 4 miles each way for the last 2 1/2 years. Before that trips were 25 MI or so each way and averaged 27-29 MPG. Best mileage ever was on LONG trip to TX.. about 31 MPG, stopped for gas at 520 mile mark on trip OD, put 16.5 gallons in.
95 SE Auto. No mods, not sure if Gas light works or not.... never seen it!
Oh yea 153+ miles.

Holy S***! I changed the KS and the car is unbelieveable! I thought it was quick before, now it scares me sometimes. :-) I have not yet tested the mileage yet but don't see why I won't get well over 30 now as I was getting 26 - 30 before. The car is a bone-stock '98 5-speed. I used to get around 17 mpg before until I changed my driving habits. The car will coast forever so if you simply pay more attention to what is coming up, you will add a few mpg easily.
i jus had my o2 sensor code come up and i need to change my spark plugs...but i have honestly seen my mpg increase. i've been getting at least 28 mpg mainly all highway. i definately take it easy while i am driving though.
i have a stock exhaust and a k&n air filter. i use premium gas also...i really don't have any mods that would effect my mpg though.
