What is your gas Mileage?
Thats true. but in general i have heard that a small open filter with a strait pipe is a good 1 or 2 mpg. Plus my car is absolutly silent, freaks me out a bit, i cant hear the engine the windows up. even with the radio off.
I was wondering if anybody knows what the best speed/rpm's give the best mileage... I drive long distances more than I like, so to save some money on these CA(+$4/gallon) prices, it would benefit me.
98 Max SE MT Mileage in WI
I just did a 413.7 mile trip and refilled up with 14.712 gallons of 93 octane Mobile gas and got 28.12 mpg.
I was doing 73-76 mph for about half those miles. I wonder if I could have managed 30 if I wasn't heavy on the throttle a couple of times. The last few miles, I got her up to about 100.
It is definitely more fun to drive a slow car fast than watching people drive fast cars slow.....IMHO.

I've yet to duplicate my all highway tank @ 28.4 mpg
But lately I've been getting 26.5 all highway and 29-30 in the city (I like to coast allot, gotta problem?)
99 SE-L 5 Speed w/ mods & around 163k.

I have a 99 with a 5-speed and average around 22-23. That's with mix of driving on the interstate and city everyday. I try to keep the rpm's down but with a 5-speed it's just so much fun to see what it can do every now and then
.
.
me to i could have a shelby Z for $400 that just needed some minor rewireing to get it running but eh could not find the title for it. also almost had a 98 cummins 4x4 5 speed from the same guy for $3500 but it was being held for someone else even tho i had cash in hand.
im getting 16 right about now but i am having troubles with the evap canister purge control valve solenoid or code p0807 and it is causing my charcoal canister to fill up with gas. normally i would get about 21mpg and i have a heavy foot
Gas Mileage after New Catback?
Has anyone noticed better gas mileage after putting an aftermarket catback system?
I am installing one tomorrow to my ride because the original exhaust has rotted away right between the cat and resonator.
At least it lasted this long. I lost mileage since the break.....down about 2 to 4 mpg lower than normal.
The catback I am installing is a straight thru design too....and yes I am keeping in the muffler silencer.

Im averaging about 26 mpg w/ a mix of highway and city and spirited driving. Its prolly like like 28mpg highway. 22 mpg city. 5spd. and i routinely shift from first at 5k rpm...but i also skip gears too. I love V6 power and the gas mileage isnt all that noticeable. My friend had a V8 and his pockets were always squeezed from gas
I just recorded 180 miles on a full tank, all city bwtf. i have read every sticky/search there is about gas milage. About the plugs, fuel filter, air filter and I use 93 oct only. this poor of a gas mileage a definite sign of what the problem might be ??
98 GLE w/212K miles.
I do a weekly 440 mile round trip of all highway driving. Fill it up with Shell 93 octane before I leave and have some left over at the end. Checked two weeks ago and was getting 29.37mpg. Just changed the air filter to a good Purolator this morning and will be getting an oil change later this morning, both in anticipation of this week's trip and will be measuring after the trip to see what I get. Hoping for 30+. will post results later this week.

The items that you mentioned in your note (plugs, filters, quality gas) are all important for improving mpg. I am far from an expert on the topic, but I have done things like checking my tire pressure regularly, getting a wheel alignment and tires re-balanced, cleaning out my trunk of all non-essential items (removed many pounds of junk). Having the spark plugs (platinum) changed at 200K miles proved to be the thing that pushed my mpg up noticeably. I also got some good advice from one of my mechanics regarding gasoline. Here in Pittsburgh, one of the supermarket chains has a program in place that discounts gas at their stations if you buy groceries at their store. Well, needless to say the quality of their gas (even the 93) is suspect and can change from week to week. The mechanic's suggestion was that the store's gas station would 'buy from anyone' and that it would be better to settle on a good quality gas from a major provider. I've gone to Shell and it's proven to be a good thing for my gas mileage. Last thing that I can say is that I changed out my knock sensor about 60 days ago, and saw immediate improvement in performance.
1998 Maxima GLE
146,000 miles
I just changed the spark plugs, new air filter, and changed from 87 octane to 93 octane. Everything is stock. I still need to change the knock sensor too. Mostly highway miles.
Went from roughly 25 mpg to 33mpg

i have a 95 max 5 speed with full intake and exaust...im runing about 21 if i ***** to the wall it and if i baby the throttle then i get around 26 to 28 most ive gone on a full tank was 423 miles but my gas light didnt come on...scared to find out when it does
edit: i have about 193000 miles on the car

1995 se 5-speed with 245,000 miles on it. CAI and underdrive pulley for mods that would affect gas mileage. Depends on how clean my air filter is, but i have regularly gotten over 30mpg. I do all highway driving (an hour commute to work and back everyday) and have gotten over 500 miles to a tank almost on a regular basis (just filled up and 526 miles/17.2 gals= 30.58mpg). Its all about driving style, anticipating stops, keeping a constant speed. As soon as you start to ride the throttle the mpg's plummet.

Maxima's fuel tank is 18.5 galons
I like the fancy stories in this thread about mpg....and most of the heroic numbers are based on wrong calculations....like having 18 inch wheels and an inaccurate tio hell odometer
or counting the tank as 15 ot 16 galons
............I have a very hard time wondering a 12 or 13 years old maxima (even if marvelously maintained) can have a better mpg than a new maxi driving from the dealer in 1996 !

You ARE right about bad calculations - I see so many "400 miles per 'tank' " I'm sick.
However, there's no reason to expect an older car to get significantly [I]worse[I] mileage than when it was new.
