high mileage 1998 maxima

1998 maxima 350,000 miles great around city vibrates 55 and above

new tires balanced and rebalanced still vibrates maybe cv shafts will alignment help

caution my lower radiator support rusted out be careful

30mpg hway midas said put in oil pressure switch dealer told me 7 years years ago need rear main seal nada

97 gxe 5 speed, still a baby at 185k.. Just the normal stuff, few small problems here and there.. Suspension has been more of a headache than anything.

My old Max is a 96 gle auto at 201k not a problem and took HEAVY beating, until it finally met up with a 6 foot ditch, and now resides in my back yard.. Can't bear to let her go, I see too much potential.

timing belt tensioner assembly (i forgot what its called)

other than that and regular maintenence its been good.

'95 se just hit 270k. personally i've fixed a fuel injector and coil pack, a/c compressor, o2 sensors, and power door locks. that's about it runnin like a champ

98 with 284K...1 owner b4 me...runs perfect original motor and tranny...used 2 work at Autozone so I changed every part they had in stock 4 my car 4 free...EVERY part!!...no joke!!

Sold my 98 SE 1 year ago with 250k on it. It still ran like a champ. After I sold it the whole suspension went. Shocks, CVs, Rack & Pinion. It got fixed then the guy I sold it to (my neighbor) destroyed it

I still see it all the time just sitting there calling my name for help.

Auto 97 GLE 112k miles.


Small leak in radiator, replaced the whole thing.
Replaced all four rotors and brakes.
Full front and back strut assembly.
Knock sensor.
Oxygen Sensors.
Tune ups & Oil Changes - the usual maintenance.
Rims are peeling and look ugly.
Weird green corrosion on the chrom trims.

And the Bose speakers are going out, the back two Bose spakers don't work, and the door speakers cut in and out.

RIP my friend

My '96 SE has 295,000 plus change. It currently has a warped head. Bought car with around 85,000 on it. I've changed water pump, alternator, clutch twice, cv's twice - think that's about it other than minor stuff.

It's been sitting in my drive for 9 months now, can't bring myself to scrap it - I just wash it from time to time, and dream of fixing it, or some end fitting for such a reliable car.

96 GXE auto with 179,960 miles. It runs like new but rear main seal leaks a little and needs to valve cover gaskets.

All it needed in those 179k was 1 radiator, 1 egr solenoid, and 2 window motors.

Just bought my 1997 SE today!! 204K. I am the third owner. The girl I bought it from bought it 13 years ago with 41,000 miles on it. I am about to replace the radiator. It has a slow leak from the top of it. I also have three codes for an O2 sensor, the knock sensor, and a P1105 code for "Map/Baro Switch". Looking at fixing some things up on it and getting it running perfect!!

SOLD 12/1/2011 - 98 Maxima SE 5 spd, bought at 124,000; sold at 221,000. Alternator, cv axle, rear hub bearing, knock sensor, 3 coil packs, neutral position switch, makeshift lower radiator support support.

NOW - 98 Maxima SE 5 spd, bought at 142,000; now 146,000. New lower radiator support, spark plug seal (rear valve cover gasket), knock sensor, flex-pipe (WSPD Y-Pipe), rebuilt starter, about to recall my alternator out if I can, think it's on it's last legs.

1996 SE 5-Speed, GIVEN to me by my cousin. Sold my '06 Charger cause I had to go part time at work to go to school, and he was looking to part with the car. He bought it in 1998 with 41000 miles on it.

Currently at 165,500. Since I got it in April, I've changed:

Fuel/Air filters
Spark Plugs
Rear Calipers/pads/rotors (STUCK.)
Front Pads/Rotors
Rear Struts
All 3 O2 Sensors
Power Antenna lol
Speakers all around
Head Unit... he had some old Kenwood in there
Had a bad ground at the CKP
Really random, but changed the Driver's Side door ajar switch

Issues:
Heated seats no longer work. Driver's side worked when I got it, now neither of them do.
Oil... is kind of all over the lower engine. Can't localize the leak. Based on the longevity I'm hearing these cars have, I might just do all the gaskets when it gets warm out.
P0440 and P0446. Can't pass emissions... haven't started tinkering on that yet.

1995 Maxima GXE 5-speed

I have 301984 miles with no check engine light. I have a slight stumble now and then, but since I'm getting 26 mpg around town, I hate to change anything!

I've replaced the water pump (leak), several O2 sensors, and the front valve cover gasket. Other than that, the engine and transmission are original (aside from plugs, filters, etc). I haven't done any mods.

All in all, my Maxima has been an awesome car!

95 auto - 263k problems started at about 200k fixed most of them were sensors and passenger side c.v. axle. Now the transmission is slipping bad

211k here, leaky ps return hose, and leaky valve covers, crank position sensor, and once we did the right rack boot the alignment is off. But the thing is so quiet to this day!

220k all Georgia miles so happily rust free. Only issue I currently have is a rear main seal leak and the boots on my steering rack are busted so that will have to be replaced down the road sometime

Its my Daily driver, since I have joined you all have saved me LOTS of trouble/money in keeping this thing going. Currently still running strong and no CEL after last weeks O2Sensor replacements.

1997 Maxima SE with 204,800 on it. A few problems I need to get fixed. Lower control arms (Ball joints are bad), replacing the end links on the sway bar soon, and also play on fixing the valve cover gaskets in a couple of months. Also need to replace the MAP sensor and the knock sensor. I am getting a code for an 02 sensor, but not worried about that right now..

99 Maxima-240k....tranny gave out at 239k miles but my faught burning out on 20's......alternator,starter,cv axels,brakes, the ecu was changed because 2 of the coil pack resitors fried in it other then that shes ready for any road trip at any time.
just normal wear and tear items.

I got a 95 SE auto(sigh) with 296,xxx currently.
having problems with a constantly screeching belt,
replaced both CV axles,
both rear struts,
new battery,
up and coming repairs for good measure as i am (i think) the third owner.
needs alignment, vibrates at close to 70, may need new alternator, seems to be losing antifreeze over the course of several months, and something knocks in the front end going over bumps and while turning....... :/ lmao
BUT SHE IS MY BABY AND I WILL RUN HER INTO THE GROUND!!!

The vibrating probably is your tires or other suspension components that are worn. The 4th gen doesn't have much alignment to square up, only toe adjustment. That something knocking could be the spring seat being out of position which is easy to do. GL with the car though and congrats

You have a lot of catching up to do... My daily is not a max but she is a mutt with 643,000k on her bought her new in '89.
my max has 305k miles not bad and she still runs beautifully!!!

highest mileage

just hit 361,000 on my maxima 1998

issues i have had

starter changed twice, o2 sensors 10 years ago and 2 yrs ago

lower radiator support bar corroded in middle and replaced

usual brake jobs belts etc 3ompg hway 26 city

bad tire vibs freeway at 60mg/hr balanced few times no help live with it

bodys real good today temp 80 picked up squelling noise at idle up to 35

dissappears rides beautifully but wife says get a new car

seems im bonded to this black beauty all the best to you people out there

I won't bother listing what's gone bad on this thing but just know that the Engine and Tranny are both still original and have never been serviced other than oil changes.

Anything that has gone bad has been my fault, alternators, batteries, suspension components.

The ODO on my Max was changed out to the reverse glow years ago when I had 330K on her.. Now im at something like 460K???

99 SE.245,000 +miles and still running strong except for a rumble noise almost resembeling a cat problem or a possible exhaust replacement. BTW-daily driver 60+mile a day commute.
