tranny is going... and going...

I think my tranny is starting to go. Automatic tranny slips between gears. In OD if I give it slightly more than just a little gas it drops down to lower gear and rpms increase until I ease up on the accelerator then it goes back into OD.

It's the worst, isn't it?

I just need this tranny to make it a couple more months, anything I can put in it? Lucas transmission fix?

Haven't tried getting any code from the tranny yet. The engine light is not on.

Tranny is staying in gear for higher rpms in the lower gears than usual and on the highway, when the in the OD gear if I give it a little more than a little gas (I can give it a 'little') it downshifts.

What I mean to say is...
In the lowers gears, the tranny allows the engine to rev into higher rpms before shifting.
On the highway, going about 65mph, the tranny is in OD. If I give'r just a little more than 'a little' gas it downshifts until I let up.

sounds like a "slip", but it could be a TPS issue. See if you ahve any codes (although the CEL should light up for that code, if it works)

Im not sure what your saying.. but when you give it some gas... the car is supposed to downshift, idk what the problem is... I had an auto with a tranny that died, so until you lose 2nd and 4th gear... u got nothing to worry about ^_^;

Also another sign is that when ur driving on highway at say ~80mph, thats about 3,000RPMs i think, and you let off the gas ur rpms drop to near idle (~700rpms) then the car doesnt accel until it gets back up to about 3000 when u get back on the gas, then u know tranny is going out.

Oh also check the fluid.. dark red/brownish is bad. Also smell it if it smells very burnt thats also bad.

like the kinks once said, " paranoia will destroy ya " , chill dude. first things first, fluid should be clear and amber colored red and not smell like anything other than atf tranny fluid. are you popping od on and off while your driving or is it doing it on its own??? there's a an overdive light on your dash, if there was a problem it would stay on and/or flash to indicate somethings wrong. it stays on when you push in the od button on the shifter, and, from my understanding you leave overdive on. don't ever turn off overdive while driving, only if your stopped or in park, you'll know there's a tranny issue if od is off and it does'nt shift properly. at least thats my understanding and expierience with auto trannys. lastly, take it to a trans shop and have them do a free diagnostic for you, if there's a charge, find another shop. meanwhile, baby that trans until you get her cheacked out. good luck!!

It's not a TPS issue. Myself and another member (Dubbya) have noted this behavior as well. Your tranny is toast.

My 2nd and OD are pretty much gone, (essentially the symptoms that you have described).

Mine is perfectly fine and it still acts the same. You fellas aren't understanding what the problems are. It's a slipping tranny, face it people. A TPS would not exhibit these symptoms. Takes what seems like 45 minutes to shift,

i would have to concor, hes losing 3rd and slipping by second. torque converter is shot and the band(s) around the wheel gears are loose and slipping. i'm just starting to expierience " flash " shifting as my trans guy has explained it to me, and he said to take it easy and not push it too hard. i'm at 172,000 in my 95 and i don't beat her to death as i'm worried that i'll have to do a trans. i found a 66,000 tranny for 650.00 and my guys puttin in for 500.00 and i'm in no rush. good luck orgers and love ur max!!!

I've had the same problem with the rpms at freeway speed. Sometimes it'll shift in and out of OD for no good reason, other times it's just fine. If I take it out of OD, then it's rock solid. I haven't had any slipping, though.

It's been going on for about 15K miles now...

Thats normal. If you accellerate a bit while the torque converter is locked, it will unlock (seems like a downshift) RPM's rise a bit and you speed up. Letting off the gas a bit, the converter locks up again. Normal operation.

If it's slipping between gears during upshifts (1-2-3-4) while your accellerating, thats a problem.
