I had the problem as well. I took it to a good body shop, they could not find the source. Took it to my mechanic and he could not find the source. Nissan dealer could not diagnose it either. Finally I took it to a transmission shop, and they diagnosed it as a "bent intermediate exhaust pipe." 45 minutes of labor later, I was on the road again and all was quiet again.

That was two years ago. Unfortunately all those speed bumps and scrapes have brought the noise back.

I have a different problem. everytime I go over a speed bump or a drive way at an angle, I hear this knocking sound comming from the rear of the car. its not metallic sounding, its more like someone is knocking on the trunk of the car. I know its not the spare or the jack since I took them out and it cant be my subs because I removed them once. its not my struts because I still have the noise even after replacing my suspension. any Ideas?

I go 20mph over a speed bump. What damage can this do to my car? My car is pretty high and it isn't lowered so I figured it wouldn't do any harm.

just a suggestion.. i have a complete stillen exhaust. y-pipe, b-pipe, ss muffler, and rt cat... ever since i put it all in ive had rattles that refuse to go away. one thing ive noticed is that the muffler has ALOT of movement in it. it will just sway back and forth as its suspended from the hangers. ive been under the car 5 times moving pipes and clamps around with no sucess. i know that one of the bars on the muffler that goes though the rubber hanger(the one on the right side if u look at the car from behind) is very long and it does hit the side of the car. sounds similar to what your describing. im gonna try and get some kind of brackets welded to eliminate any movement in the rear of the exhaust.

I had a rattle on my 95 Max, turns out it was a combination of a few things:

1) Resonator beyond the cat had two rings on either side that had rusted off, and moved freely along the exhaust. I pried the damn rings off.
2) Exhaust bracket for had rusted off, so the exhaust was clanging against the bracket. Bracket no longer secured the exhaust, so I removed the bracket and the rubber washer.
3) Rubber cover on rear strut (to keep water and dust out I guess) had ripped and separated into 2 pieces, one piece was stuck to the top, the other to the bottom of the strut. The pieces would hit after severe bump, nothing to worry about. I figured they'd go away when (if) I changed my struts.

Does the sound seem like its coming from the dash? And its REALLY loud, and usually when your at WOT? Go to a mechanic and have him make you a hanger for the front of the ypipe.
