vaselive it is then .... thanks Dave!

one more quicky, the outter race (inside the case), 1, is there really a need to replace them (am thinking yes, since they came with the kit, and it is a rebuild) and 2, how do I get them out for the head of the MS and IPS (oppisite case side)? Diff ones are done, easy to do them, but I don't have a hook to get under the others.

Thanks mates!

pry bars or sometimes they will fall out if you heat up the outside of the case around the bearing with a torch, put it in a hot tank, etc. the input shaft is a ball bearing howevr, there should be no race still in there..

you are correct, after posting that I looked and it's actaully the outter race for the MS. I'll try the torch on the outside of the case. I just don't wanna cut em if I can avoid it.

The mainshaft bearing cup usually doesn't have much wear. If yours is still shiny, you can leave it in there. If it'd taking a dull grey color on the contact band replace it.

Removing that race can be a beeotch without a special low-profile inside puller. I have in a couple cases drilled thru from the clutch side of the case so I could drive it directly out. Then I fill the hole with JB weld.

well, I am gonna leave the MS outter race in place. it doesn't look too bad and I don't feel like drilling thru the case if I don't have to.

Here is a picture of the (drivers side) diff outter race, to give all an idea. The noise I was hearing was the IPS bearing, but I am certain that this didn't help issues any.

sorry, the pix are not the best - too much glare

you're putting the race too close to your camera, it can't focus that close. anyways, yeah that's a pretty typical looking diff bearing race.

Chillin -

I totaly understand what you mean! It took me a good while to get to this one. I noticed my gears starting to "whine" (really it was the bearings I think) and that is when I knew I needed to get this done. It's just taking a bit longer for me to do than what I had anticipated due to my work schedule. (hard to come home after a 14 hr day and do much to the Maxima)

Order your kit so you have it when you need it and then just get to it when you can. I will warn you tho ... those bearings are fun stuff! Hope you have a Dremel tool with cutting disc (better make it several cutting discs! lol) Are you gonna do the clutch at the same time? It took me (no - I am not kidding) 10 minutes to do my clutch. Easiest part of the whole stinkin job!

oh i am gonna try today but...my diff bearings have been shot a LONGGG time now...months. The axle is real floppy and the whine is loud. not to mention the axle seal is leaking. i just hope when i get in there nothing unexpected is broken.

My clutch isnt that old so I dont think I'll be replacing it.

Im interested to see how you measured for your shims, thats what im most worried about I guess. that and there being too many parts i cant keep track of lol.

well ... to be quite honest, I didn't measuer for the shims - just reused the old ones. My bearings didn't look "good" by any means, but they wren't destroyed either. My Maxima has 105k on it and I am sure in another 100k or so, I'll need to do another rebuild. But ... for the mean time, I just reused the old shims.

(IMO) Part of the problem with the diff bearings is impropper shimming, and part is due to a weak case. The Motorvate rebuild is on a VLSD trans ... I don't have pozy, so I wonder if the shiming on the VSLD tranys is different from the factory than that of non VLSD. The bearing size is also different on VLSD tranyz and that may play a part as well.

Anyway ... it's not a bad job, if you have the right tools / time / place / and the .Org to help ya out

guess they are different then. I was under the wrong impression then - my bad. I am guessing here, so please correct me if I am wrong.

The VLSD means that the viscous disc on the diff "locks up" ??? thus causing the other weel to recieve power. With Posi Traction, the diff is always locked?

Anyway ... gotta quick ? as to where the ball goes? It's the revers asembely and I think this is where the big ball goes, in the bottom hole ??? Help! lol

Yep the ball goes in there, but you need to put that in with the bracket too or else the ball won't stay put. Use a wad of vaseline to keep the ball from squirming loose.

You've got to be patient and never force it.

Check the reverse shaft bolt and make sure it's turned to line up with the bolt hole in the case.

It's DONE!!!!

OMG what a beotch of a job! Glad it is done now tho. No more bearing spin noise and that alone is worth it.

Thanks to all who helped me with this tremendous project. I am working on my write up and will post it when I am done. (depending on my work schedule, I will try to get it done this week sometime)

My g/f asked the other day "what was the hardest part" - I just told her all of it was difficult. lol On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the hardest job I have ever done) - this one rates at a 10 in my book. I now totaly understand why people make a living doing this type of work. But ... now that it is done, I need to find another 10 I guess. tehheeee

You will do just fine Chillin ..... if you have patience, time, and the right tools. My write up will include a list of the tools I needed / used and how to get to some of the difficult bolts. I left the crossmember in place (no need to remove it ... or the Y pipe for that matter) although it may have been easier to reach some of the bolts with the CM / Y dropped.

One bit of advice tho ... try not to do this job in 23º weather! Sucks bad enough as it is, the cold certainly doesn't help any. My hands look like someone ran them thru a shredder. (ok ... maybe I am exagerating a little here)

haha yeah i know. its not even cold down here in houston...mid 70's for the last week or so.
I dont have problems removing the transmission or any of that. its just the actual tearing down of the tranny and putting it back together.
