Installing a detector near the rear-view mirror, need to get 12 volts power up there

Is there an harness going to the mirror or around the top of the ceiling lights?

I'd like to mount my radar near the rear view mirror but need the 12V power up there...so I was thinking of getting that power from the ceiling lights.

What sort of wires are up there anyways?

Also, this site looks interesting...if it can be done.

Thanks

It could be done, but it's not that great of an idea. Last thing you want is an exposed pin with B+ going through it.

So I take it that I should open the map light, splice the wires and connect....do you know how many wires and what they do....I'm assuming there is a black for ground and a white or grey for power?

thanks

I have my V1 mounted up there & i ran a down to the fuse box. I used whats called add a fuse which is a 10 amp fuse that plugs intoy our fuse box like a regular fuse except it it has a wire attached to it. that way your radar will be fused, & you can ground it anywhere you like.

Can you guys post some pics of your installs? I jsut got a V1 also, and would like to do a clean install up there.

I want it right below my rear view mirror, but tapping into the map light isnt a good idea.

How do you run the wires up top, through the pillar and down to the fuse box?

I guess because just in case something blows, you atleast have the fuse (in the fuse box) to back up.

I need some setups with pics! Would love to see!

Your argument against using it is that it's fused?

I have mine wired to the map light and have for some time. The only problem with it is that its always hot. As in my radar detector doesnt turn off when I turn the car off. I have to turn of the radar detector as well. Took a few jump starts to engrave that into my memory.

couldn't you use the power from the map lite then put a little rocker switch between it and the detector to turn power on/off?

I have an 8500 too and bought the hardwire kit about a month ago. I was planning on doing exactly what you are doing, snaking it through the headliner, down the a pillar to the cig lighter so that it still goes off when I turn the car off.

Its pretty simple. All you have to do is run your power line across, between the headliner & the windshield, just tug on the haedliner a bit & tuck the wire under it. Run the wire down the a pillar & to the fuse box. Use whats called add-a-circuit, ita a fuse that plugs into your fuse box just like a regular fuse only it has about 2'' of wire & a butt connector on the end. One wire from the radar goes to ground & the other to the add-a-circuit. Thats it. You can run it to the cig. lighter but then you'll have to go back across under the dash which will call for a little more wire & a few zip ties. I'll put a few pics up if you want.

I just wired it through my cig lighter, The wire goes under the front dash then up my "A" pillar on the driver's side, and tucked under the ceiling.

I think it's easier for me to use the map light. I removed the map light panel and saw two wires...I split the red wire (which was the power)...I didn't actually split the wire but used a little plastic clip that you can insert two wires into it, clamp it and it will make the connection (not sure what it's called). Then passed the power wire right under the mirror (the headliner and windshield).

I'll post some pics once I get my camera back.

Add-a-circuit?? Wow, neat! I can use this for my CB radio connection. Thanks for the tip!
