Transmission stuck in 3rd gear (AUTO)

I did some searching on here and found a little help, thing was it was in the 3rd gen section. So yea the car is fully warmed up and the facker WILL NOT go in 1st, 2nd or 4th. Can i do a hard reboot on the computer and maybe reset it? Sillinoids? I've had a bit of hard shifting issues associated with them before so can that be the problem? BTW, car has 237,000 on original tranny/motor

Another quick question regarding my climate control. When on full hot sometimes it fluctuates from really hot air to luke warm. Car stays fully warm on gauge so i somewhat ruled out thermostat. Some wiring? Common problem?

Solenoids A and B off is third gear, so you'll get stuck in 3rd if your wiring gets damaged somehow, electrical windings in the solenoids fail, etc. I imagine Nissan designed it that way.

Does it do it in the cold, too?
How's the fluid level and condition?
Anything lead up to this?

It just did it tonight. I didn't move the car until it was almost fully warmed up. Fluid level SHOULD be ok but i will double check tomorrow when its cold. I changed it last summer with nissan dmatic fluid. I also have a tranny cooler. I had the solenoids changed at a dealer a few years ago because i got a code and hard shifting. Then i was a dumbass a few years back and undid that sensor on the sturt mount that gives you full line pressure and drag raced (this was on the new solenoids that nissan put in). It pissed it off afterwards and gave me a code which i later cleared and never came back. Of course it shifted firmly into 2nd everytime though.

-auto tranny fluid level is checked fully warmed up while the car is in neutral on a level surface.
-you should not have played around with your repaired tranny by doing the (drop resistor?) mod

I believe this is a safety mode for our Autos. My trans recently kicked the bucket. It wouldn't go into reverse and was a bit clunky in drive. I did make it to the trans shop though. He took it for a test drive. He was brutal!!!! While completely working over my poor (already dying) transmission, it did enter into what the mechanic called a 'safe mode'. Locked in 3rd. We drove back to the shop in 3rd. So, my guess is your trans is bad and is stuck in safe mode. ?

"The A/T control unit has an electronic Fail-Safe (limp home mode). This allow the vehicle to be driven even if a major electrical input/output device circuit is damaged.

Under fail safe mode, the vehicle always runs in 3rd gear................. blah blah blah, it can also happen from excessive wheelspin followed by braking immediatly after, if this is the case shut key off for 5-seconds......... blah blah blah........Always follow the work flow: A/T 15"

hey guys i cant start a thread yet cause i am a new member but i am in need of help. I have a 96 infinity i30 (basically a maxima) w/ auto trans, anyhow it skips 2nd gear. the car runs all the way up the rpms in first gear and then drops down to like 3k rpms when it finally shifts. So i am thinking it is skipping at least 2nd gear if not 3rd as well. if i try to manually shift it with the shift selector it still doesnt change gears, it acts exactly the same way. Is this a problem with the shift solenoids? Thanks for any help you can offer.

sounds like its skipping a gear for sure.I am thinking it should catch second gear higher than 3k rpm.
