Reading Tire Sizes?

I know this is probably a newbie question but I am confusied on how to read tire sizes. I am coming from some 31x11.5 on a jacked up explorer to reading these 235/40R18. I know the last number is the rim size but how do I read the others? I just got my Max.

Another question is if the offset on some 18x7.5 rims is 42mm will they be ok, I read in the faq that anything that is 35-40mm is ok?

Is anybody running some 235/40 with some 18's? How much did you lower your Max?

235 = section width in mm's
40 = % of section width = sidewall height (i.e. 235 X 40% = 94mm)
Obviously the 'exact' measurements vary slightly by manufacturer and model...

Stock 97-99 SE rims have 45mm offset... so your 42 offset will be fine as is the preferred 235/40 size for 18 inch rims... if you could get 8" wide rims, that would be better...

Ditto all of that and also you can easily lower the car up to 2".

I do plan on lowering it 1.5 or 2 inches. I want to get some ADR GT- Sport hyper silver rims, 18's, with some Kumho Supra 712 235/40. I hope this is a good set up! I have heard different things on this tire, some like some don't, they are within my budget though.
