K&N Air Filter worth it?
#2
drop in? theres no power gains with a k&n drop in filter. It actualy kills the hp by very little. The only advantage would be the reusability.

$50 is way much for just a drop in, hell even a cone. I got mine for 35$. FYI: Any stock filter will fit 95-03 Maximas.
K&N is all I use, whether it's wrong or right, both my VQ's use them for a combined mileage of 200k and 8 years.

not worth it, spend it on gas to drive to work and make money to not have to care about spending 50

-Remove spare tire
-remove trunk lining etc.
any others? oh yea, and a HOw-to to remove rear seats if you have it

are you serious!? Dude sitting in your backseat tells you how to take it out just look around and why would you want to do that for 1 mile better if anything? If you want weight redux tips search around theres plenty of threads.. Infact i remember a thread a few years ago where ceasar weighed basically everthing possable and posted it in a thread so LOOK. whatever floats your boat i guess.

with KN you run the risk of damaging your MAF as a result of all the extra crap you let through.
i started a thread on this a while back.

plus then theres this "bob the oil guy" who did an extensive experiment comparing all the air filter possibilities. turns out Nissan OEM filters have the best flow vs filtration ratio.

I have driven my VQ's a combined mileage of over 200k and have yet to have these types of problems, i.e. too much 'crap'.

I achieved my best mileage (on my 95 gxe auto) with a true CAI (filter in the fender well) y-pipe, and after removing and cleaning the UIM, LIM, IACV, TB, and PCB. New plugs might not hurt either. I touched 30 mpg once in a while. Usually about 26-28 though. This is about 80% highway driving...and driving like a granny. rpms<2000 ftw.

I agree, I usually take it in between 3000 to 3500. One of the great things about the Maxima is that you don't have to rev it a lot to get moving. In my Prizm, in order to get decent momentum I'd have to push it down near half way. Granted that car got 33 MPG in the city regardless. I might buy another Prizm to go along with the Maxima just so I can save on gas lol.

FUEL FILTER - get OEM, for the same reasons.
You can check the stickies and the oil/maintenance section for info on the 300zx filter if you want, but IMO it's not worth the headache.

I worked at a nissan dealer and the service department was constantly replacing mass airflow sensors because of reuseable filters getting oil on them because the are so close. get a intake that will move the filter further if you want to be safe and get power gains

but K&N filters are one of the worst for allowing the most particles through the filters, whether they are properly oiled or not.
As far as it being a 'headache', yeah, you're right, its not really too too bad, but like I said I just don't personally feel its worth it, the only real gain is the service period (if you're n/a) and the filters are cheap so I'd rather change it more often than mess around getting the bigger one in there. But to each their own.

wow..

at 2k rpm a 4th gen can go about 80 Km per hour, you do the math...its not about how fast you get to the speed limit...the vq has plenty of torque to get to the street speed limit without going over 2k rpm, and if yours doesnt, then you need to fix it...

I wasn't asking how long it will last, I was saying that buying a K&N may be cheaper in the long-run instead of buying several stock replacements. But if he doesn't think he will keep his car long, then it may not be worth it.
I know how long a maxima can last.
