What the hell is this noise!! With PICS!!

Hey guys so I just bought a 5 speed maxima and on the way home I hear a loud humming coming from the back wheels. At first I thought it was the muffler, but the whole exhause system is brand new so that couldnt be it. The faster I go the more intense the sound is. It sounds like something is rubbing. I looked at my wheels and everything looks alright but my rotors look a little worn. Could that be the cause. Also it is NOT a frozen caliper because the wheels spin in Neutral. Here are some pics of my rotors. There is a rusty crust around the top of them.

Judging by the mass amount of brake dust thats a rusty brown color Id say you need pads and rotors. Chances are you will need calipers too.

I would start with this also.

It's new to you - it should be getting all 4 brakes checked, new fluids throughout, and new filters.

That for sure is your wheel bearing. a way to test and see if it is, is to listen when you turn different directions to the wheel and if it makes more sound one way then it is a very good conclusion to say that your wheel bearing is bad.

digging this up .... cause I don't wanna start another thread on the same issue. I have a "ticking" noise coming from my pass. side front and I just did the axle and rebuilt the tranny, but I noticed the noise prior to this, now it's just getting more prominant. How can I check my wheel bearing? Could it be something else, maybe ball joint or tie rod ??? How would I check these other things as well? If it does turn out to be the bearing, where is the best place to get one, or should I repack this one?

here is the wheel assy. You should know that unlike in the front(where you use pres), you have to change the the hub which comes together with the bearing. Here is how it looks like :

I have a similar problem as you do (humming noise). All calipers pads and rotors are almost new. Tires are balanced with no abnormal wear. Both rear hubs are new and the noise is still there !!!! I was almost 100% sure that the noise would be caused by the bearing (as that was the case in the front wheels where I had a similar noise). Now, what else could that be ?
With that said, make sure you check that shield, and inspect the tires after you've first checked for play in the bearing(Notice that there may not necessarily be any play but the noise is usually the first indicator that the bearing it's going). You dont want to change hubs that are still good while something else might be the problem.
Ohh and let us know if get rid of the noise. thanks

I have a noise on my 1999 Maxima recently while driving but the noise stops when I apply brake. I looked at brake pad and roto, they seem to be fine. What problem do you think of? Any suggestion is appreciated.
