Need some advice on short shifters

Wanna get a short shifter. Seeing that the B&M one is considered alot by users. How about the ebay ones?

Ill post a few links and tell me what you think

I have the OBX and I love it. Although the **** height didn't shink too much, the throws were almost cut in half. I would recommend it. Although, the first link is a replica of the B&M.

but the B&M is a 40% reduction in throw. The first link is 30%.
looks to be the same though minus the ***.

My 96 se has the adjustable shifter, some 69$ one the PO had put in. He had it adjusted all the way down, and that was absolutely horrible. From 1st to 2nd was less than 1.5 and impossible to find nuetral. It took a lot of force to move it from gear to gear also. It is adjustable from 30% to 60%. Since it's my first short shifter, I can't really comare to other ones. But it does seam to shift pretty good now that we spent about 2hrs adjusting it up.

Guess, long story short. What ever you get, don't try and adjust it for the lowest possible, I believe it actually slowed the shifting down, and made it hard to get from gear to gear.

The one in my car came from customenterprise.com and cost 69$

I originally had an OBX STS, and decided I would try the B&M STS since everyone said good things about it.
After I installed it I began to hate it. I could never get it to feel tight. It would start out tight but eventually loosen up, too much. It uses a nylon spacer and washers to fit into the linkage and just never seemed to stay snug. The OBX has an actual bearing inside of it that allows you to tighten down onto pretty snuggly and still be able to shift.
Ive ditched the B&M and went back to my OBX.
I also didnt notice a throw difference between the two.

FYI, for those wanting to lower the actual height of the STS, doing so makes shifting notchier.

^^ That's weird, sounds like it wasn't installed correctly or something. I've read about people not installing them correctly, hating it, then only to realize it wasn't installed correctly. Once fixed, they love it!

I have absolutely no problems with my B&M. Did you buy it new or used Flava?

Bought it new, Install is pretty basic though. The only thing a bit different is using the snap ring.

I definitely agree that the B&M is notchier and is not as pleasant to drive compared to my OBX.

I didnt say the B&M was notchier, what I said what it would eventually loosen up and would allow a bit of play while shifting.
What I was refering to when I made the notchy statement was in regards to making the shifter shorter, by cutting it.

okay well im fairly new to the maxima scene..i was in the 240sx crowd...and back then with the 240s there was a general rule of thumb that using short shifters from ebay caused the trans to start grinding...so if you wanted to go short you had to go b&m..i see ppls post and they have used the obx in the second ebay link...my question is, is it okay to use that brand? anyone have that one for more than a year and drive their max daily? coz that price on ebay is low enough to make me want to buy the shifter coz the b&m ones are pricey...any input?

What exactly do these short throws do differently than the stock shifter?

And, in relation to that, I remember seeing that one person took out their stock shifter, cut it down and reinstalled it. I can't however seem to find the post anymore. Does anyone know if thats effective? (or at least somewhat better than stock?)

They do exactly as you stated, they shorten the throw so you're not rowing a boat.

That only gives the look of a real STS IMO. Sure it technically shortens the throw, but only a very small amount compared to a real STS. And, the shifter assembly becomes unbalanced and shifting becomes awkward and slightly difficult (from my experience in a friends Maxima)

Well I realize that it shortens the throw

More correctly I mean, how do they do it? Its obviously not just making the shifter shorter, because some of these STS's are about the same as stock in terms of height...

Ahhhh.... The real question comes out.

It's all in the design with relation to where it mounts and where it pivits. Kinda hard for me to explain. Hopefully someone else will chime in and answer this for you more clearly...

Yeah I got it now thanks to Crusher. It seems like every time I can't find something it turns out to be in the stickies... I'm not used to forums with stickies that acctually contain useful information...

So basically doing kevlo's mod isn't worth it your saying? If you dropped it a few inches, that would definitely shorten the throw a good bit, no?

It's all a matter of opinion if it's "worth it"

posts 17 through 26 again in the second link. Your question has already been answered.....

Damn! thats ridiculously cheap, I kindof have to doubt, but then again, for less than $30 shipped, it would be worth a shot.

You can get the same one here for less

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-01...em190205905075

That is just the regular cheap ebay shifter with the Nismo logo painted on it.
Nowhere in the auction is it stated that it is a genuine Nismo shifter.

Go to Nismoparts.com and you will not even find a Nismo short shifter for those model years.

I have a B&M shifter for sale. PM me if you are interested

You might want to check out this thread. My son's post regarding our installation of a B&M and new boots from Redline. Time to make the leap and "do it"!
