Bad coils HELP!!!

My mother-in-law was just given an estimate for around a grand for replacing two ignition coils wires. This includes 5 hrs of diag time for an intermitent misfiring problem that has been ongoing for three years. Three other shops have misdiagnosed this issue. I finally found one that spent a great deal of time testing different things and found two bad ignition coils wires. The mechanic also wants to replace the knock sensor for $672. He claims one of the cv boots is torn and wants $362 to replace it (probably the whole axle). Anyways, I am getting ripped?

Yes! Do you have any mechanical knowledge? They are fairly simple to do. There are write ups on here.

Holy expensive batman! Those repairs are more than the value of my car!

Coils are cheap (used 50 bucks or so) and take about an hour to replace for an inexperienced mechanic.

Knock sensor is about 80 and can also be replaced in an hour... it takes small hands, but it is an easy job.

As for the CV, that is horribly expensive to replace the boot, the boot is a $30 part and will take an hour.

Smack that mechanic for insulting you!

just letting you know... you should find out from the mechanic exactly which coils are misfiring and just buy the new coils and do it your self. its two screws on each coil and a connector. its pretty easy and wont take long. im pretty sure if you post where you live someone can either help you or do it for you for cheap. The knock sensor..lol $672.00 thats a major rip off. You can purchase a new one off of ebay for like 60 bucks shipped to your house. And you can find a write up on how to change the knock sensor yourself or have someone on here change it for you. Torn CV boot..thats alot of money also. You can get a whole new CV joint and have it installed for cheaper then the mechanic is asking you.

So the moral of the story is.. do us all a favor and DONT pay that mechanic all that money. You are definetly getting ripped off.. with no lube..lmao.

save your mom or wheoever from spending so much.she will more than thank you. There is this place called stickies, with most if not all....writ-ups on how to get these things done.if that doesnt help(which would be weird)....haynes manual/fsm would do the trick.....if that doesnt help, there is a motorvq site(not sure of site), that should more than assist you....assuming that you have tools.

The only problem is that I dont live anywhere close to where she lives. I am mechanically inclined and would do it. But I live 500 miles away from her. Anyway, I'll call the mechanic tomorrow. I want to see the estimate. The real reason why I posted this thread was to prove a point to my mother-in-law. She thought the mechanic was doing a good deed because he found the problem when everyone else didn't. lol.
