check engine reset procedures

I accidently left something unplugged when I started my car and it threw up a check engine light. I plugged it back in, disconnected the battery, but still the light is on. I did a search for this problem but the only one who had an answer was this one:http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....ine+check+fuse

but the link to the info on how to do it was dead. can anyone help me with this?

Thanks,
Scott
