mobiletek.com (Don in Texas' company) will have performance torque converters soon, but they are mostly for people pushing a huge ammount of HP, anything comparable or more than a supercharger would add. Other than that you can try getting the thing replaced but it'll likely be expensive as hell.

If I understood what your mechanic said correctly he means that the torque converter doesn't lock properly with the drive shaft on the front wheels, meaning your wheels are spinning at a different RPM than the enigne, which is the entire point of a transmission. When the torque converter locks your wheels travel at the same number of RPM's as the engine, so it has to do less work to maintain the same speed or accelerate.

While it may be annoying and not detrimental to the tranny it does make your engine rev harder than it has to, putting more stress on the engine and creating more wear and tear. It's not a big problem, not by a long shot, but if you live with it for years it could lead to more maintainance than usual, lower gas mileage and a decrease in performance.

For more info on torque converters you can check here.

Hope that helps. As always, if I'm talking out of my a$$ just let me know...
