How were David L tails made?
I just bought some David L 95/96 red clears and the def. do not match the inner tails. It looks like the color has faded. So I want them to match. How did he make them? Is there a write up he did? Did he split them and paint the inside? If so what paint did he use? Any good information is appreciated.
Testor's Candy Apple Red.
Its a paint used for model cars...you can buy it at a hobby store.
IIRC, They have to be opened up by baking them or usig a heat gun, then painting the inner lenses. I have never seen a write-up for this either.

He used multiple coats as well until the color matched. Not sure how many though.
Are you sure you purchased true David L's ?? Ive had mine for over 6 years and they are still perfect.

The guy that I got them from in the classifieds said they were original David L's, and he had purchased them from Mr****sSE (his screen name is something like that). They are TYC lights so they are the ones that started out clear. I have no reason to believe they were not made by David L. They just don't match the inners.
Check out Wal-Mart; I know they have Model paints in where they keep the models. If not, I know I've seen some small spray can versions of paint in the Automotive area

You can see all the paints that Testors makes in various OZ size cans, you can also order from the site.

to repaint them to make it match use the oven baking method. 225* for 10-15 minutes or until it comes apart. use Testors candy apple red paint with light coats until it matches. let dry, pop back in oven with same specs and put back together.
I believe DavidL was a member that opened up all clears and turned them into red/clear tails then sold them. I have some all clears in my closet and no they never did match the factory clear part of the inners exactly. And if they were in use for a long time i could see how the sun would cause an even more drastic difference in the clear top.
David used Vans Red Taillight paint. I had a set of these from his first run making them. They were an exact color match to the stock pieces. And were painted on the inside, NOT the outside.
The testors does not match at all, they illuminate a pinkish color.

No pink here

Also...why bump this thread? And why do it when you don't even have a Maxima anymore?
