98 and 99 Maxima Question?

Does the 98 Maxima have the same type of little problems that the 99's seem to have. Seems like the 99's had electrical issues and so on, does the 98 Maxima have the same kind of issues?

I am talking about a 98 SE 5 speed. Any thoughts?

I'd be more conserned about the trany than the electrical in a 98'. The 99's had more "standard fetures" than the 98's so ... there in lies some of the electircal problems. More on the car, more to go wrong with the car.

How many miles on the 98'? Any maintanence records at all? How much? Location ??? Stock or not?

You can't just ask us a question like that and not include all the goodies too! lol

I am checking out a 98 Maxima SE 5speed with only bose stereo and it might have ABS, not sure though, it was parked on the street with a for sale sign on it. It does not have the sunroof and has cloth interior.

It has 108K on it and NO service records at all. And I am in the bay area Ca. Did the 98's have a transmission issue with the manual 5 speed?

A lot of 4th gen's have 5 speed trans issues. It's the differantial bearings thats the problem. Not a huge deal to fix, but it's a concern. Check for leaks where the axle's go into the transmission. If it's nice and dry, your good to go. If it's wet, chances are good the diff. bearings are failing.

As far as electrical issues go... Never had any issues with my 99. Coil packs fail, 99's seamed to have a bit more problems with them, nothing to concerning.

Ha .... 4th Gens and even 5th too (95' - 01' I think) 5spds have known problems. Bad shimming from the factory mostly, but bad bearings (Input shaft, Main shaft, and diff) are a very common thing on the 5spd tranys. (due to too much pre-load (bad shimming) I'd drive it and listen close while sitting still in a parking lot - push the clutch in (car in "N") and let it out ... if you hear any spinning noise, the IPS (input shaft) bearings could be on the way out. Also, if you hear any rubbing while rolling with car in "N" and at idle ... possible bad Differential bearings. Just food for thought, it is probably fine .... check it out though!

How much????

If you get a 98 you won't have to deal with immobolizer issues the 99 has.

I have heard 98 models had alternator problems and the 99 models had coil packs. I think that's about it.

+1. I have a 99. Only thing to fail on me yet is 2 coilpacks and possibly the MAF (every now and then it'll play with my idle). Otherwise I've been just great. No other problems on my car. I got my car in November of 06 at 26,004kmi...maintain it religiously and now I'm at 58,xxx and my car is just perfect.

For a 98 check that the lower radiator core support is not rusted out, maybe not an issue in CA.

It's a 10 year old car, what do you expect? Things will go wrong, so expect it. And when they do, we will be here to help.

There's a chip in the 99 keys and they need that certain key to start that certain car.
