Starter Motor needs attention on my 98..

Hi guys; I used the search function couldn't come up with anything.

About a week after purchasing my 98 Maxima used from a local dealer, I would get this annoying but very brief "grinding" sound and then It would dissapear and everything would be fine. I instantly thought the starter could be the culprit as thats the only time I hear it. What I gathered from using the search function is the starter motor could be on it's way out, but I also found the DIY on cleaning it up and regreasing the starter.

I tried to take care of the starter while I had everything removed to change the fuel filter and flush the coolant, followed the haynes manual and removed the electrical connectors and started to go after the mounting bolts.

These things are on so damn tight and Im in a weird position so I can't get as much leverage as I need.. I tried a 1/2" torque wrench,3/8" ratchet with multiple extensions, combination wrench.. I even shot some PB Blaster at it and let it soak for 15 minutes and still I can't get nothing to budge.

What gives; I really hope I don't need air tools..

I always just used a 1/2" ratchet with a 3" extension, short sockets. Piece of pipe short enough for hood clearance, if it called for it.

Tried a breaker bar? Torque wrench isn't really the best, can throw it out of adjustment.

No, haven't tried the breaker bar. Ill have to talk to my buddies stepdad so I can use his.

I tried everything I could and they wouldn't break loose.. They seem so tight that it would be impossible to torque back to that.

Make your own breaker bar (or cheater bar). I used the jack handle from my cheap floor jack. Thats how I was able to get my starter off. And yes, its mounted absurdly tight.

The bolt closer to the front of the car gave me no trouble on my mom's max but the bolt in the back is much longer and after 15minutes of taking an impact wrench to it, it finally came lose.
