Can an O2 sensor be salvaged?

I have had some serious problems with my catylitic coverter. I put a cat on my 95 max that had the o2 sensor in the wrong place. The o2 sensor ended up rubbing against the bottom of my car..causing wear and a short in the o2 sensor. The wear is in the wiring connected to the O2 sensor. I do not want to spend the 100 dollars for a new o2 sensor...I would like to save the one I have because I assume it works besides the wiring beinig worn away. Could I fix the wrinig with sodder and cut the worn wire and have the o2 sensor as good as new or am a stuck with buying a new one? Also, where would the best place be to purchase an o2 snesor for the least amount of money. THis is the cat o2 sensor. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Try courtesy nissan for a decent price.

You might as well try and fix it, what do ya have to lose. And if it still won't work, the rear O2 is around $100.

you could try that...sometimes they have O2 sensors on eBay as well...keep looking for that as well. Good luck and let us know how it goes...

hmmmm...

That is what I figured...i was going to try it but I didn't know if anyone has tried to salvage their old o2 sensor when it shorted out. What is weird is that my o2 sensor isn't broken...just disconnected at the wire. THe nissan dealership wanted to sock me for $140 for the o2 sensor and then they wanted $800 for a new cat. I just laughed at them and said that their were blatantly ripping me off. They just ripped me off for $300 in labor to fix a shorted wire in my engine that had something to do with the o2 sensors....then I got the same reading as before after they fixed it. So that means that they didn't fix it, yet I am still out $300 dollars and nothing was fixed from what I can see. They didnt even check if the o2 reading was still coming up after they fixed it. This is a place called LIA nissan in Schenectady, NY....NEVER GO TO THEM!!!

forget courtesy.

I have had nothing but bad experiences with courtesy. And even though their prices are cheaper than nissan, I got o2 sensor estimates of less than 90 dollars at places around where I live. I doubt the are origional equipment but that stuff doesn't really matter to me. I got both of my calipers from a place called Bap-Geon in Ny and they game me 2 loaded rear calipers for $240 dollars less than courtesy woudl sell me two unloaded calipers. That is a lot of money saved and the calipers work great and they look just as good as the stock ones, plus they came with rear pads...which I already had but that is still great. BUt I think I am just going to stay away from Nissan dealerships...they seem to just rip people off, but if you like the origional nissan parts then more power to ya. Thanks for the reference though.

You will notice that the wires on the O2 sensor are insulated with a braided cloth-like material instead of rubber or plastic. Plastic wire insulation is usually rated a maximum of 90 degrees C. above ambient. I don't know what the design operating temperature is, but it is obviously more than what plastic can withstand. You will have to find something better than electrical tape or heat-shrink to insulate your repair.

Yes, that was what I was thinking would be a problem. I will have to find something a little tougher. Maybe I can just take one off some rich maxima owners ride...Nah just kidding. Theft is wrong

I may just buy one and deal with lighter pant pockets for a week. I see where this is going. I will howver look around advanced autoparts for something similar.

EEEh...I got a starter aftermarket and I got calipers after market...I have had nothing but good results. I dont think there is noticable difference.... have never had a problem aslo because most of the stuff comes with a year warranty. NIssan is like 90 days I think.
