Too much MT Fluid cause 4th gear whine & 5th gear popout?

I had to pull an axle shaft, so I drained the MT fluid and refilled afterwards. There was already some MT fluid in the drain pan (from my brother's car), which I didn't bother pouring out. After refilling until fluid started coming out, I replaced the plug for the fill hole and started her up.

On the first drive after this, I immediately noticed: a) a whine whenever the car is in fourth gear (so I try to avoid it now) and b) that 5th gear pops out from time to time.

I never once experienced either of these issues in the past (although I know that my input shaft bearing is on the way out).

Could my problems be caused by filling the transmission w/ too much fluid? (I didn't wait very long for the excess fluid to drain out of the transmission before plugging it up--though, it wasn't as if fluid was still pouring out.)

filling it up to the hole is about how much you put in... where the hole is(iirc) is at the right level. You pretty much cannot fill it too much unless u had like a pump to pump it in and close it real quick...

The front end was up while I was filling, so I lowered the car to let the overfill drain. I figured that maybe I didn't wait long enough before plugging it up, thereby leaving too much fluid in. So, can overfilling cause these symptoms?

Has anyone who has had these symptoms been able to get rid of them (w/o a rebuild or 6spd swap )?

Yeah its not impossible to overfil. If you have the car jacked up, just the front, the angle the car is at can allow you to overfill it. Im sure ive done it before, without realizing, but you cant really overfill it that much to my knowledge, unless your jacking the car and have it at a 45degree angle or something crazy.

It is possible though, im not sure if that would cause 5th gear pop out issues though. when my input shaft bearing was going, i had first gear pop out, that was a combination of input shaft and diff bearing, the second time my input shaft bearing cage like blew up, liekly due to wheel hop, and i wasnt able to get it into first or second, because there was so much play in the input shaft.

How long did you experience the 1st gear pop out before the transmission went for good? I'd like to milk enough time out of it to gather parts for a swap...

Well first gear pop out, went for about 6000kms before the tranny blew, but take this into concideration, the car popped out of first gear whenever i let off the throttle, and when the car was parked for lets say 4 hours it leaked a thing of gear oil approximately the size of a dinner plate, actually bigger, the tranny was dead, i milked that thing for ALONG time. i think most of the time i had like no fluid in before it finally locked up.

Thanks for the background. I haven't noticed my transmission leaking any fluid, so hopefully I can milk this for the next few months.

Yeah i really dont think its input shaft related, especially if it just arised after the axle being removed. I wonder if it has anything to do with the axle, was it replaced or anything?

Nealoc187 would probably be the best person to ask in a situation like this.

Yeah, I hope he chimes in. I had to pull the axle because I let the CV joint pop out (by dropping the hub--oops). But, I popped the CV joint back in, and it seems OK.

I really don't think it's axle related...but I could be wrong.

You didn't mention what you used for fluid?

I can't imagine any reason why this would be occurring. Did you drain the oil out of one of the 5th/reverse detent plug rather than the drain plug and forget to put the detent ball back in?

Redline MT-90 is what was originally in the transmission. The drain pan had maybe half a quart of Amsoil in it. As far as debris, there was none in the Amsoil that was already in the pan. The MT-90 that I drained from my transmission had a little bit of glitter (miniscule pieces of metal) in it, but I removed as much as I could. Most of what was left had settled to the bottom of the drain pan, which I didn't pour in.

No. I drained from the hole that holds the gear indicator switch.

Hmm that's odd. I don't really have any idea what would cause that. I've refilled my trans on jack stands before just like you did with no odd occurrence afterwards.
