Installing my 3rd Starter??
Installing my 3rd Starter??
Has any one had a problem with your car going through starters, I think my car has burned another starter up and im curious to see if any one has experienced this and may have possible solutions or suggestions? This will be my 3rd starter in about 4 yrs, the last one was put on about 7-9 months ago!!!
perhaps the starter could be working much harder due to another problem.
Where are you getting the starters from? Refurbs? I went to advance auto parts and went thru 2 starters before I got my money back because they refurbs I bought from them were bad.

now that you mention i did get them from advance auto, and they are the refurbed ones with the lifetime warrenty, also i did get one from them that didnt work from the beggining it never made it to the car so they may be selling faulty starters!!!!!
I once worked at a shop rebuilding starters and alternators. We refurb'd units and supplied locally owned auto parts stores around town. The process for a refurb'd was dissasembly, cleaning, inspection, replace parts (when needed), rebuild, paint, test and put in a box. New is always better, but a lot more costly.
My Intermittent Starter Problem
I just installed a new starter in my '96 Maxima because sometimes, I would
turn the key and only hear the relay click. At these times, if I would
roll my car backwards a few feet, it would usually start right up. Recently, the problem was getting more frequent, thus the new starter. Now, the problem seems even worse with the new starter. Could it be that I got a defective starter from Autozone? I am hoping it is not my flywheel or signal
ring. Anyone with similar problems or probably correct bad news for me? Thanks.

Not sure Hickory Lane. I just fixed my starter problem. The O'Reilly boys replaced the starter I bought just 2 months ago with no problem. The wire that engages the starter just fell off. Bad solder job!!!

Starter Shims. etc.
Hi,
I took the new starter I bought at Autozone out, and they gave me another rebuilt one. It worked for the last 3 days, but today I had the same problem. I had to roll my car until it would start. I guess I will run the codes. and see what comes up. At present, I am running my auto ac blower motor off my cigarette lighter. I need either a new "ac auto amp", or just a new blower motor resistor. Needed new ball-joints so I bought a control arm kit off
of e-bay motors. Drives like new, but I thought I got away without needing an alignment. Fried my tires. Got new Coopers.
I want to get an oxy-acetylene set-up for my work. Will that suffice for exhaust system work as well? My starter problem appeared well before my ac went bad. I just want to find an ac auto amp from a yard. It's like a part that gets no mention in the manual. Weird, but I'll be giving it some "Iris" paint sooner rather than later. Looking ratty, but running like a top once I get going.

changed my dying starter today. i got it for $112 and replaced it myself in about 1 hour. would have been half of that if i didnt clean some of the grounds. the car has never started better its real happy now.
The first thing I'd do is add a good ground from the starter to the chassis, bad grounds will toast starters.
It could just be bad starters, but I'd be checking electrical connections, make sure they are clean and well mounted, if the battery is not new, get it load tested (autozone, etc. should be able to do this for free).

I had problems with my starter too finally found a local parts dealer that gave me a live time warranty on it and ive done it so many times i can do it in there parking lot swap the core and off i go. not much help but maybe a heads up on looking for a life time warranty for further replacements
Are these symptoms similar. Im having startup problems for the 3rd time at 90K. Is my starter going down?
It would turn, but not fire up completely. It took 7-10 tries, but now my sister can't start it, so I have to check it out. It's definitely not the battery. This starter was a BOSCH reman.
Any other ideas or where to go for starters?

Fishy--
Does the starter turn at all? If not, do the idiot lights on the dash all light up? If yes, it may well be your ignition switch. They're cheap and easy to replace, but you might try putting a piece of electrical take in the flange slot first, to ensure a firmer contact. That worked for me. (This will make more sense once you look at the ignition switch.)

As for the starter, it seems like when I turn the key and hear the clicks, but no response from the starter type of thing. I'll try have someone turn as I listen in.
Pretty sure it's the damn starter as this problem occured long ago, but can't really remember the details.
