$1500 to Replace Rear Main Seal??

Car's at the dealer for some service.

I asked them to price for me the replacement of the RMS... it's dripping pretty good.

$1456.00 + tax is what I was quoted.

This seems like an aweful lot.

I am in Tampa, Florida, but still...

Probably isn't a bad price from a dealer... But that is extremely expensive. The cost of course comes from having to drop the transmission. I would try a different shop other than a dealer or go for an adventure and drop the trans yourself. For a dealer, it's normal. For any other shop, that is very high. I'd look for something around 700, that was what a shop charged me to pretend to change my seal. I'll just change it during trans issues as it drips hardly at all

best thing to do is to take the car to another shop (mom and pop) and ask for a quote, and or just look around. IMO that is way too much but than again your car is at the dealer so go figure!! dealer's are like docotrs, they like to bend us (customers) over and tell us to cough and see where our money is going to go. but that is my own opinion. IF you have free time some DIY knowledge, good friends, the right tools, and some beer.......you have a "hey lets fix my RMS party!!!" woohooo!! yea!

put some mothers seal tightener in with the oil, mine was dripping a little and it worked really well. if its leaking that bad, then you probably want to replace it and i would think 350.00 should be as much as they will charge. depends on labor rate, but the part from the dealer is about 50-60.00 bucks. watch your oil level!!!

if you know how to change your clutch you can pretty much replace the RMS, just like kzoosho, i changed mine when i changed out me clutch..and i was glad to cause i noticed that it needed to be replaced. 50-60.00 dollars...good lord man!!!
I hate to say it but I only paid like 32.00 for the seal..took me 2 cases of beer 7 hours and three trips to the import store, gave me the wrong flywheel and the wrong clutch. the third was because the lady at the counter was a cutie good luck!! keep us informed on what you do

i'm pulling the car.

there's some other stuff going on related to their diagnosis, rediagnosis and misdiagnosis of stuff related to my A/C sysstem and my confidence that the dealer is shaking me fair has been completely blown... i'm outta there.

evidently there are a couple of nissan specialty shops in my area. i'll go talk to them about the seal replacement.

$1500 my a#@.

wow, that looks like a good price to me! I don't have any tranny leaks (ive replaced axle seals), and I still have the factory clutch going on 145000 miles. I'll probably be looking into this soon....... Was this a "mom and pop" shop...or some friend of the family? (ive always hear $700 was the cheap price)

...in regards to the rear main seal, the nissan dealership gave me a list of stuff to get replaced..which was a load of bull --but they said rear main seal needed replacing...(not saying yours does not...this was just my reason for looking up the price)---- the actual cost of the seal...under 30 bucks. 1500 bucks for a 30 dollar part just wouldnt sit right with me. Go to a shop to get a new clutch and bring them some new seals to put in. go ahead and get all the seals you can replaced.

You can replace a clutch in about 4 hours, and I always replace the RMS while I'm in there.

Since you're in to replace the RMS, go ahead and replace the clutch too if it's got over 40k miles on it or so. the savings in labor charges will pay off in the long run.

So figure about 4 hrs labor + parts. a good clutch is about $300 and the RMS is about $25, IIRC.

Tampa labor rate I'm goign to guess is about $100/hr, so for a clutch and RMS job you're looking at $750 total parts and labor.

well first off you guys keep talking clutch replacement... mine's an auto. not that i think it would really matter as far as the RMS replacement cost goes.

the seal is truly leaking... no Q about that.

i pulled the car yesterday w/o allowing them to perform a single service. i also told the service writer that they will not be getting any of my business ever again as i have absolutely no confidence in their ability to properly diagnos and repair problems... i can elaborate if anyone cares to hear the story.

although i had an idea before, this situation truly reinforced the fact that those who are employed in this particular dealership's service department know nothing more than how to read a service manual, pull and replace parts. they have absolutely no concern for the financial and motoring well-being of their customers and when it comes to trying to figure out what's really happening in a given automotive system, they haven't a friggin clue. further, they will not, not one iota, listen to what the customer tells them about the car... i can tell you more about this too. these guys are more than happy to replace a part that doesn't need to be replaced and charge you for it... don't spose any of you have heard this type of story before, huh?

this situation and my frustration has nothing to do with the RMS thing or the pricing for that replacement service, although i do find it curous that there can be a $350 differential b/t dealers w/in 10 miles of each other. this all has to do with a total FUBAR scenario related to them trying to tell me s@#t about my currently non-functional A/C system.

if any of you are from the Tampa area, do not allow Autoway Nissan of Brandon to so much as glance in the general direction of your car... that's free advice.

HAHA, you think $1500 is bad. Average people don't connect Infiniti w/ Nissan, I don't know why. So, I went to the Infiniti dealership that serviced the car for the previous owner to get the scheduled maintenance and I don't remember the exact price but I do remember that Infiniti wanted to charge me $70 more than the Nissan dealership, just for the parts. I guess Infiniti owners have more money to spend
