A/C leak or compressor

I guess it’s that time of year again when we start using the good old A/C to keep us cool. It finally got up to 80 degrees here the other day so I decided to give the A/C a try.. Here is what happened.. After running the A/C for about 10 minutes and traveling at highway speeds the air temp at the vent was at 72 degrees.. Not good as oat was about 80. Every time I reduced the blower speed the temp would drop considerably. On the very lowest blower speed the discharge temp dropped to about 41 degrees. After increasing the blower speed the temp would rise as well.

What do you all think the problem could be.. Weak compressor, low on r134 (a leak) or some other type of problem.

I have the same problem. I was told I had a weak compressor and needed a replacement. Works 'okay' at highway speeds when it's not crazy hot outside (72-78), but really falls off as the temps rise. Also, it doesn't even pretend to blow cold around town. My $0.02.

Hey Mike and AV8orjb try first a can of r32 first and if that doesn't work than you know is the compressor but I rather spen $5.00 than $500 to find out it just need it to be recharge .. I'm sure that the manual suggest the the ac be run here and there even in the winter just to keep the fluids and oils well circulated ... just my 2 cents !!

Cheap route before expensive route

I went and bought a can of r34a with a low pressure guage. First tested and had about 18 psi @1500 RPM on the low side.. Way to low.. Added the R34 until I got about 28psi ( 3/4 of the can). Air is 48 degrees with 80 degree outside air temp and on highj fan setting. I must have a slow leak in the system that I will have looked at as soon as I can.

You probably have a leak at the bottom of the compressor. If you have someone do a new one expect about 800 buck job.
