How to take off mirror shells...

I searched but the only instructions I found was how to take off the whole mirror... i dont need to take off the whole mirror tho. I just wanna remove the painted shell. The FSM has a pic showing to just pry the mirror off... this would give access to the 3 screws that hold the mirror shell down. So I did that, and after an hour strugging to take off a rusty and by now stripped screw, I just decimated my old cover and was able to take it off... But now my problem is lying in putting the mirror back in... The mirror wont stay on like it did before. That and one of the metal spring things that was there fell out and for the life of me I have no idea how it goes. Is there any type of detailed write up on how to put this damn mirror back on? I ran outta daylight and it started raining on me so I just had to give up... But now im afraid i messed up that mirror...

It sounds like you broke your mirror if your messing with a spring. You pried the glass off in the wrong spot. Lets see some pictures of the back of your glass.

You pry at the red line I drew. If you look at your broken one you should be able to figure it out. Practice on that one before moving onto the passenger side..
