99' Nissan Maxima need to replace struts = $650

I was told my a shop (Les Schwab) that when I bought new tires and wheels that my 99 Nissan Maxima needs new "gas strut assembly" as they are apparently leaking 35PSI.

Even though it's a 99' it's under 70K miles. I do plan on keeping the car for many more years. I asked my friends who has older cars and no one has even got their struts replaced.

Have your Maxima got their struts replaced? So I get them done??? I personally don't think I should. Advice anyone? Thank you.

the following is my pricing:
2 gas strut assembly - $320
labor for struts - $84
2 special application gas shock spring seat $166
labor or gas shock sping $84

Grand total of = $654

If you have any play or looseness it is probably your strut mounts. Pretty common item for the 4th gen. Pick those up from a site like worldpartsexpress.com and put them in with a local .orger if that's the case.

I second that...even if you're not planning on lowering your car it might be a good idea to look into some struts that would be capable of handling a drop if you choose to do so in the future for that price.

Just something to think about.

Get Tokico blues and be done with it. Replace worn bushings and/or mount if needed.

you can check them yourself to see if you even need them.that sounds like a ripoff. see if they are wet and leaking. you can also push down on the fender a couple times and see if the car keeps bouncing. same for rear. with 70K it could go either way.....

so if I push down on the fender and bumper, if it bounces it means they are leaking or no???

les schwab is a rip off. i messed up my alignment not too long ago and took it into to them. they told me i had a bent strut and steering knuckle totaling $1000 to repair. i took off the strut and nothing was bent at all and took it to another mechanic and they said it was fine and aligned it. so my advice would be take it somewhere else..

If you are OK with the cars ride and handling, then there is no reason to change the struts. At similar mileage I found that my 1999 was leaning too much in corners and wallowing over bumps. I'm used to sports cars, so for me it was very irritating.

But I know that for many people the softer ride (as the struts wear) is considered a good thing. Just keep to the posted speed limits for those off-ramps!
