Rear Main Seal... looks like it's leaking and has been leaking pretty good.

Here's what you gotta do: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=562190

got a quote from one shop. ballpark ~ $1000.
not paying, nor have the money to repair that.

besides those leak stop additives which really don't work well,
what other remedies can i use to help this? any recommendation of specific oil?
should i use heavier weight? right now i'm running synthetic, 10w-30 i think.

Not really a whole lot will fix it aside from replacement. I would not use any type of additive. Maybe you could try one of those high mileage motor oils and see if that helps at all.

Keep checking around, I know you'll be able to get it replaced for less than a $grand$. I got mine done for $770, which I understand still might be a little bit high.

For now, just keep the area real clean so you can keep an eye on the severity of the leak and keep an eye on your oil level. Provided you can live with oil droppings you can drive with this condition for quite sometime as long as you monitor the seal for a catastrophic failure... at some point, and it's just a matter of time, your gonna have to have the seal replaced though... so start saving.

it may be an axle seal...if it is its a hundred times easier to fix.
IIRC if youre leaking tranny fluid its the axle seal, if youre leaking engine oil its the rear main seal.

most likely rear main seal tho.
ya a grand is too much. bring it to me up in wisconsin and ill do it for $200, plus cost of parts

Ive dropped my tranny before and yes its a *****, but better than paying $1000.

you want me to drive up to wisconsin!? that like $1000 in gas right there

why don't you move down to SC where its bright, sunny, and all the hot girls are and then i'll pay you $200 to fix it

smell the leaky fluid 1st before you go off getting idea's about the cost. if it's oil clean the area and make sure it's not coming from up top and if it's gear oil do the same and trace it down

and like the other orger said for a grand I'd just drop in another engine less your's is fairly new

Im also leaking tranny fluid, my estimate from the shop was also 1000.
Im just keeping it clean and riding smart, and it will last me until it starts slipping.
It catches on without a problem now, hopefully by the time it starts slippin in the future, I will have saved enough to throw a G to the side and get a 5 spd
