Clutch Problem

Hey guys so I have another problem with the Max; but I'm thinking it should be something easy to fix. Let's see what you guys think it is though. My car is a 96 5 spd. If I don't have the clutch pressed down I here; I guess you can say noise from the engine. But if I press the clutch down the noise completely goes away. If I have the hood open and have someone do this while I'm listening by the motor I here the same thing. There's the noise when it's not pressed and then when it gets pressed down it goes away. What could that possibly be? And how do I fix it? The noise is annoying after a while. It's not ridiculous loud it's just annoying.

By the way I don't hear it when I'm driving it's just when I'm idle....thanks guys!

Transmission input shaft bearing.

You can search many other posts on the subject, but here's the cliff notes:

It will only get worse.
No one knows exactly how long it can last until failure.
It will never fix itself.
Repair requires removal & disassembly of the transmission.

eh.....just my luck!!! Is that something that I can buy from say Autozone or another store like that?........Is that the name of the piece I should be looking for? Transmission Input Shaft Bearing? Sucks for me! I have a decent knowledge of auto repair but have never removed an engine or trans for that matter. Approximately what can I expect to be paying for this going to a garage? ANy ideas? lol well let's see what I can find...........

Sourcing the part is the least of your problems. It's not an Autozone part, BTW. Drivetrain parts house or dealer item.

Removal, disassembly, repair and install are the major issues.

Total bill at a repair shop could exceed 1K. Not a really common repair for a shop. They could probably be doing their first one.

Clutch pedal pressed down to floor noise - throwout bearing.

Clutch pedal up noise - input shaft bearing.

oldngivout is correct. If you have no noise until you push down it is your TO bearing and you can jump for joy because it is an easy fix if ur replacing ur clutch. If the sound is going away when you push down, input shaft bearing. Which is located Inside the transmission. aka input.

I have the same issue, Except I can just tap the clutch pedal and it will go away.

If your clutch is disengaging when you press the pedal that inch or two its your input shaft bearing possibly the front one aprox 40-50$ with tax or the rear around the same price. If your clutch is still engaged it might be the TO bearing and you should consider yourself lucky!
here is a picture of a bad input shaft bearing;

I just spoke with a friend of the family which has been a mechanic for 35+ yrs. He says that it could possibly be the pressure plate also.....what do you guys think? Worth a shot or don't even bother wasting my time?.....

wqit til you have to change your clutch so you can change everything instead of dropping the tranny just for the TO bearing spending like $200-250 just for a lilo job wait til you change your clutch

when dealing with rotating parts like that its hard to say what it is unless you take it apart! If you put it on a lift and use a stethoscope on the transmission and around the area of it with releasing the flywheel on and off u'd be able to hear it much better
