My A33B gets 27+ on the highway (100%), where as my 4th gen gets 26 -27 mixed OEM ECU, and my 5th gen gets 23-25 mixed.

These cars are rated at 18 city and 27/28 hwy. So 30 or 32 is not 8 mpg over the rating.

i gotta say, i am suspicious of people getting "well above 30mpg" on the highway. my guess is that most of you are not calculating the numbers correctly.

if you did get 31.8 mpg for that one tank, and if you did indeed drive it dry, that means you would have gotten 589 miles on 1 tank of gas.......or if you drove it to the orange light (@ 3.5 gallons left) that means you would have gotten 477 miles for that tank.

when you filled it up after that drive, how much did it take? 16 gallons? 17? 18?
No mods - automatic - stock wheels and tires.

This was not an average mpg for the whole trip - only a calculation for the last leg. I measured the mpg on the last tank of the trip by filling up all the way just before I got on the interstate highway outside of Hilton Head, SC. Then I drove 278 miles to Atlanta. As soon as I got off the interstate, I pulled into a gas station and filled up again. I forget what the guage showed, but I was able to put in 8.75 gallons. 278/8.75 = 31.8

The 4th gen AT was rated higher on the highway due to the aggressive 5MT FD. Search it, I know some people still have their original window sticker, and yes, it was 27 in 95/6.

full tank, outer banks NC. 500 miles later, phila pa. refueled took almost 16 gallons..... but I forgot to mention that I made the trip in 7 hours, including the hour I spent in gridlock around wash dc area beltway.... my cruise tops out around 90... traffic permitting I went beyond that. 95 5sp, 126k new clutch, new ignition coils and plugs, one new injector. my moms 4cyl accord only gets a few mpg better on a trip... gotta love jap cars.

btw if you have ****ty milage, make sure your brake caliper slides arent stickin and making yer brakes drag...

It should be remembered that the MPG stated is Nissan's number based on DOT testing requirements. It should also be remembered that those numbers do not reflect "real world" driving, and were only updated a few years back. Also remember that HP ratings were also revamped. If you were to put a 4th Gen on the CURRENT government fuel mileage cycle/loop, it would probably show worse numbers AND lower HP ratings..
Besides, back then, gas was relatively cheap. There were no REAL concerns about oil barrel prices.
That said, my car has over 289, xxx miles and I consistently get 30+ miles per gallon in highway driving at 70 to 75 mph. A work roundtrip commute of about 70 miles, plus whatever city driving, gives me a consistent 400 to 430 miles on a tank. Pretty durn good for a car of that size and power, in my book.

Ive gotta say that Ive owned allot of cars and driven manny more and almost every car I know of be it bently bmw honda oldsmobile toyota etc..... got better gas mileage as the car got older (as long as regular maintenance was done) I had a 89 civic 4dr 5spd that had 245k on it when i sold it and it got over 40 miles to the gallon and i live in NY where its always stop and go. I had the same car in hatchback and it only had 47k on it and it got more like 32miles to the gallon. as cars wear in to themselves over time they often will use less gas. unless something breaks.

I had a 2000 Nissan Maxima 5-spd (126k miles... sold it) and over time built up an average of about 31 mpg using cruise control is a big thing for me... I now have a 2005 Nissan Altima SE-R 6-spd (80k miles) and get about 29 mpg with cruise at 75 mph. These cars really do get good gas mileage.

The maxima I had was absolutely stock. I actually purchased it in NC and drove it down to Texas.

We probably averaged around 70mph during the trip, how we calculated:

1 Topped off the gas tank and reset the tripometer
2 Drove a few hundred miles
3 Stopped at a gas station, topped off the gas tank.
4 We calculated the miles we drove divided by the number of gallons it took to fill up the tank.

NC to TX is a good 8-9 hundred miles... we did this little gas test and each time and averaged around 30-31. Not sure how/why it was like this ~ but I owned that maxima for over a year before someone offered me more than what I paid for it.

Also, driving that maxima for over a year with that kind of gas mileage was the main reason I recently purchased a 98 SE. I love these cars

OK!... there is probably 10 or so max owners(in the country) who dont say that these cars are capable of 30+ mpg. Of course 8 of those 10 haven't checked and the other two probably dont know how...but I am still a little skeptical!!!! LOL! LOL! LOL!

How confident am I?

When I sold that 95 maxima (with 296k on the clock or so...)
I put it in WRITING that the car got over 28mpg on the hwy
(I gave myself a little cushion just in case)

The buyer was just as skeptical as some of the posters on this thread.
But, when I told him I would guarantee it for 30 days and put it in writing in our bill of sale, he agreed to purchase.

It's safe to say that guy never called me back about the mpg.

Thank you! I think people on here who are claiming BS just don't know how to drive conservatively. The highest I've got has been 31.2 and I regularly get an average of 30. And how can someone screw up the math here? Its easy guys...

ROCKART, where are you getting 24mpg highway from?? I've never seen that stat. Always 27-28mpg advertised (edmunds and elsewhere). Here was my last trip from rochester, NY to richmond, VA. 29.7mpg there (I use only premium tho I don't think that would help in highway driving) and 30.2 mpg back home. The car is essentially stock, has a y-pipe that's it. have been throwing a code for front right o2 sensor. It's a manual 95 SE with a hair under 190k. Driving speed (I slowed it down from previous trips) was 72-74, ~2800 - 2900 rpm according to the tach. AC set at 72 degrees. Tires blown up to ~35psi. I frankly don't know how some of the cars mileage can vary so much. I imagine some people don't use the cruise control and end up braking accelerating a ton, and others are driving on flat tires, but for the rest of you I just don't get it. I would think mileage would be more consistent. My first trip to VA with the car 3 years ago when I first got the car I averaged just over 31 mpg. And yes I'm quite sure of the proper way to calculate mpg. Good mileage for some of us in this thread.. and frankly not surprising to me. My dad's old 92 and 94 auto max's got 32-33 highway consistently.. that made me jeaouls.

No dude, look up the comparison of old/new epa estimates for that exact vehicle. it clearly states the original highway estimate is 27mpg. just because the epa changed the number that doesn't change what our cars actually get!

**edited for correction, I originally listed highway mpg was 28 mpg, the manual is actually listed as 27. In any case it's very easy for our cars to get 30mpg highway as long as we don't drive dumb and keep the cars up to date on maintenance**

Lol...I thought I was the only one to put their gas purchases in spreadsheet format...I have for the last 70,000 miles, but I don't have it up on google docs so I can't share it at the moment. And, even though I average around 26mpg (31-32 best mpg), I've spent $7040 on gas alone in three years/70,000 miles. Your spreadsheet figures are really close to my car, plus I too have a Budget Y-pipe and stock intake, and a 5 speed.

On the topic of the Prius, Top Gear did a test to show how a new BMW M3 can beat the Prius in gas mileage. The Prius got ~17 and the M3 got ~19. All they did was have the Prius do 10 laps around their test track as fast as it could while the M3 just had to keep up. However, I'm not so sure I trust Jeremy Clarkson's math on this one.

I have a 98 se auto. I used to drive 7 miles to work highway side road split and was getting 22 MPG. I then tried to be nicer on the gas pedal and braking hard and got it up to 25 MPG.

Now I drive 45 miles round trip to work each day and get 28-32 MPG on a tank going 65-70 mph. My best was a bit over 34 on a trip to my cabin going 60-70 mph the 360 odd miles.

I should note too that I drive with the windows and moonroof open, as well as have 200 plus pounds of stuff in the trunk...

:-D Hotness!

BTW i run non-oxy premium and have noticed a huge difference in mileage

i'm gonna have to agree with the pessimist here. because i had just finished an oil change before a recent boating trip. literally filled up at the freeway on ramp, and again at the offramp, nonstop at 65-68mph using cruise control and got 28.3mpg(yes i keep records of all mpg on every fill up). and on the way home bumped it up to the 75-78mph and dropped to 27.1mpg. if i ever get 30+mpg i'm taking pictures of receipts and odometer to prove it.

***edit; before anybody asks, no i wasn't towing anything or any junk in the junk. me, my gf, and some movies. no snacks cause she always makes a mess.

Back when i had basic bolt ons, and did lots of highway with 260,000kms i was getting 31-34MPG. On average about 400 miles to a tank (650km).

Switched location, now i do pretty much all city driving, under 10 minute drive to work and i average about 450-475 to a tank. (295 miles)

Question. For those of you figuring out your gas mileage in the US, are you using US gallons? 3.78 L per 1 US Gallon? Or are you using IMP gallon (4.546L/IMP GAL)

I have a 96 with about 265K on car and about 100K miles on this engine. On several trips from NE Tenn to Nashville, I have filled up in Johnson City, driven to the other side of Nashville and back to Knoxville before refilling. That is almost 600 miles. It comes out to about 32 mpg and that is up and down some mountain ranges. I have pulled a trailer down to Hilton Head, SC with an 800 pound motorcycle on it and got better than 25mpg.
But, if I use gas with ethanol, it drops about 10%.
I also have a 95 Maxima and it does not get as good, so I usually take the 96 on trips. Both cars are automatic trans.
The woman that had the 96 before me said she would get about 33mpg on a trip. These trips to Nashville were run at about 70/75mph with the AC on.

32mpg is possible

Did a double post when it said I was not logged in.
Anyway, just because you are not getting over 30mpg on the highway does not mean others are not. Thes cars really are class cars in many ways

It is easy for me to get over 30mpg in my stock 99 5spd se. It all depends on the year of the car and the driving style. For anyone not getting 30mpg are you using cc the entire trip? Also I've done several different test with my max on mpg vs spd and it isn't that great of a difference as long as the speed is constant. no accel no braking. @ 60-65mph I get 33-35mpg, 70-75mph I get 30mpg and 100mpg+ 26 mpg. And just for the record the sticker on my car says 22/27 (yes I still have it).

Oh I forgot start telling what option are in the car. Are you missing things like the plastic under the car? windows up/down? sunroof.........

I have zero options in mine not even abs so I bet I'm lighter than most of you.
