Problem taking rear rotor off

So i'm replacing my brake pads all the way around. Figured i'd take my heat shield's off since there rusted, dented and such. Did the front two without any problems but not the rear passenger side is giving me issues. Now the issue is the rotor is like seized to the hub. I banged the rotor with a rubber mallet for about a half in hour and still nothing. So i was thinking of heating the rotor up with a blow torch and then hammering it off. So what advice do you guys have for me?

there is a special brake tool, it will screw into the rotor, and then it will slowly pry the rotor off the hub. ill let someone else explain it more

Re: Problem taking rear rotor off

If you've got rust on the brake shield's - most likely there's a bit of the orange stuff between your hub and rotor - spray some WD-40 and let it soak for a few mins. - then make sure the E-Brake isn't up and hammer the rotor outwards - you should be able to see the rust at the edge of the hub and center of the rotor break as you hammer all around untill your rotor finally comes off!

Good luck!

Use a block of wood and a large heavy metal hammer.
Go to town on it and it will eventually come lose.
You might want to soak the hub area with penetrating oil overnight as well.

PB Blaster...as for that special tool to screw into the rotor to free it up, ya can use a metric bolt, but I'm not sure of the size. Beat the **** outta it with the hammer FTW.

That is how I got mine off. Don't remember the size either. there are two threaded holes in the rotor. I think it was 8mm. Take the other one to the hardware store and find one that works.

use pb blaster, then wack it, more pb blaster. The lubricant will get between the rotor and hub.

Don't whack it. As some have mentioned, there are two small screw holes. Just take a metric bolt that fits (it's a standard small Nissan bolt size) and screw it in with a socket. The rotor will pop right off.

VQuick is right. This is the easiest way to get rotors off. i dont even bother hitting them anymore. it takes about 10 seconds to do and pulls off ANY rusted rotor. it also seems to be universal. I have used the same bolt on a honda/acura, mazda and ford.

If you do get the bolt from a hardware store, get a hardened one. the regular grade 5 stuff will strip it's theads off. If you need to match one up, just take the new rotor with you and use that as reference.

By the way!!! Hopefully you didn't wack it with a BFH! Hopefully you don't have ABS neither! Cause if you do....The wacking with the BFH can destroy the ABS pickup assy due to the banging........use some bolts in the provided holes....

I just did mine this weekend, all 4. They were the originals and they came off surprisingly easily with the bolt through the rotors. Don't know what size because I just grabbed a bunch of bolts and tried different ones until one fit. Oddly, the new OEM rotors do not have the two holes through them. Put some anti-seize but who knows if that will help 10 years from now when I go to replace them again. With 4 new OEM rotors and OEM pads all around, it's a different car....

My new ones didn't have the holes (all 4), and they are OEM.....

Iron can crack. I'd rather be a "*****" than have a broken rotor.

^^^ well 99% of the time you take a rotor off you replace it LOL WTF???? it wont matter if you break it. you can break them once in a while by hitting the friction part but as long as you hit teh hub part you will be alright, just watch out for the studs.

One of my rotors came off fine with the screw method (who needs a "tool" -- just use screws) but the other one's threads stripped trying to get it off. So I wailed on it with a hammer until it came off.

It's funny that I saw this thread on the main page, because I just had this same issue tonight. I was trying to install H&R 15mm spacers on my rear wheels, and I started on the passenger side. I couldn't get that rotor off to save my life. I couldn't find a bolt to try that method on, so I sprayed some WD40 on the base of the studs, and where the rotor goes around the hub. I then banged on the back of the rotor for about half an hour with no results. Since my rotors were in horrible shape, I just now ordered some new Brembo blanks to go with my Hawk HPS pads that are waiting to go on. I decided I'm just going to do everything at once, so I don't have to worry about messing up the rotor to the point where I can't use it again. Now I have to get up early in the morning before work and put everything back together because I don't feel like doing it tonight . I'm definitely going to try the nut and bolt method next time...
