QUICK: should my buddy buy this max?
long story short, buddy needed a new car, I found him a 97 GXE for 1500 in our area (talked him down to 1250), with 108k on it. Pretty good deal, but theres a few catches, the guy hit a curb pretty hard with it:
-2 bad axels (cheap)
-2 bent wheels (cheap)
-1 bent control arm
(all of this im not worried about)
and the main reason Im posting, The guy said there MIGHT be tranny problems, as it makes a slight grinding sound while in gear.. could this be just the axels? worth buying the car and fixing it up?
We've seen the car in person and it does indeed make a sound, and the interior is in mint condition.
opinions?

gxe, my guess is auto..
are you helping your buddy out on the replacement parts? 1250 defiantly means that tranny is borderline shot. If he's not great with mechanics I would say no unless you're gonna be there 100% of the way. (this could be heartache for you just to let you know).

run away from the car.
it has clearly been in an accident.
bent wheel + bent arm = accident add in a grind in the trans and I'll bet it needs a trans too because the axle got smashed into the trand and did some internal damage as well.
Been there done that.

add on a auto tranny to the list it will get kinda spendy. but im sure you could find a auto tranny for a reasonable price (200-300)if your buddy is really looking into a fixer upper.

if the wheel hits the fender then something is broken.
how do you know the frame is mint anyhow?
did you put it on a frame machine?

then it is broken.
is it possible to bend the frame without doing any damage to the bumpers? if not, i doubt the guy replaced the bumpers and then tried to sell the car with 2 bad axels and a broken control arm.
ill let you all know how it runs when we fix all the noticeable stuff.

I agree. For that kind of money you could find a better car that doesn't need all that work. Buy it and your buddy will regret it.
