Yes, if the freon pressure is not right, the triple pressure switch will cut out the compressor. You can hear the compressor run for a few seconds then cut out.

Damn damn damn! I spend 330 for a new compressor and dryer thinking my clutch was bad for the last 4 years. It stopped working when I drove from MA to Dallas for Maxus a few years ago. Well, the shop is installing the dryer and charging the system for me and they are going to see what they can get out of it.

My system wouldn't turn on at all though. All of the fuses and the relay are fine.

So your compressor wasn't cycling at all when you turn it on? If all the fuses and relays are fine, it probably is the compressor or clutch. Guess you'll find out after the install is finished.

Just got the car back and thank God, it's fixed. I was starting to feel bad for my kids when they have to ride with me. When I lived in MA, I didn't bother fixing it because it only gets in the 90's about a week up there.

I guess there is some good in changing the compressor and the dryer at this point. My car has 246,000 and the clutch probably would have failed sometime shortly down the road anyway. Living in NC, it gets HOT here for a long part of the year so i'll be using it a lot.

I thought about getting rid of it but then I thought why? Gas prices are high as hell. It's like having another car payment.

Bad enough I have a 2006 Durango with the 4.7L V8. It costs about 80 bucks everytime my wife fills it up and the gas mileage sucks around the city. I need the truck so I don't plan on getting rid of it but I may have her go get a Yaris for getting the kids around and keep the truck in the garage for when we travel.

error: flawed economy found
unless you are buying the yaris for $500 you will be economically ahead driving the durango for at least a couple more years

We have a 15 years old 350CID Suburban and it is parked most of the time now a days. Since the '98 I30, we bought a Prius in 2001 and VW GTI 1.8L in 2003. Both these are great and the Prius now has over 100K miles.

We thought about an IS350 in 2006 but picked up a 250 instead. Gas mileage of this car is not great but not bad either. Looked at the G35 also but the old design looked dated at the time. It still doesn't have a 2.5L V6 offering in the U.S. but A33 in Asia has 2.5L V6.

Even when the "on" cycle i guess you'd call it when the compressor is actually cutting on lasts for maybe 1 or 2 seconds? It doesnt seem to do it all the time either. The air will get kinda cool then get warm, then 2 or 3 minutes it'll cycle on again for another second...then cut off for another 2 or 3 minutes. Doesnt seem to be normal but idk this is my first 4th gen tho so im kinda in the dark!

no that is not normal. the compressor is supposed to cycle on and off, but the air coming out should be consistently cool/cold.

Seems like the triple pressure switch is cutting out the compressor. Check the highside and low side pressure with a gauge set.

well not really warm but alot of difference from when u can hear the compressor goin. also i had a new condensor put in at my local mechanics about 2 months ago also...could they have over filled the system and the pressure be only to high at idle or does the pressure stay the same in the system no matter what?

Yikes, I wonder if something is wrong with mine, my compressor doesn't cycle AT ALL. Most cars the compressor cycles off when the evaporator gets really cold then they cycle on again. My car, my AC isn't very cold unless I am moving and at higher RPM, and when I have the climate control on auto (aka the AC on) the compressor is always running, it never clicks off at all. Is this normal?

pressure would increase off idle.
take it back to the same mechanic and have him check the system. Sounds like you are low on refrigerant. you may have another leak, or the part may be defective.

I agree that freon level is probably low.

We have a variable capacity compressor in our cars. The compressor is always running when the A/C is on. When the high side and low side pressure difference is large, i.e. air blown across the evaporator is warn; the compressor will increase the stroke and create more pressure or thermal input. When the high side and low side pressure difference is low, i.e. air blown across the evaporator is not adding much thermal energy into the freon; the compressor stroke decreases.

When the high side pressure is abnormally high, the triple pressure switch protects the compressor by cutting out the clutch. Then you can hear it runs a while then clicks off.

get one of those self fill things from autozone or store of similar sales.. THEN run car and see if it fills up.. then.. get to the rite level.. and use .. if it leaks.. then you know its leaking.. and if its not cold.. you can go form there...

Only the 97 - 99 years have this compressor.
95-96 cycling compressors are controlled by pressure switches.

Long time no see Deezo. Good to see you are still in a 4th gen. I remember that Dallas Maxus meet. The belt shredded heading back up or I believe the pulley was messed up after a dyno run. I cant remember. Good to see the car is still ticking.

Yeah I'm still around but too busy to post about BS anymore being in NC also. If there's another meet in Dallas, I'll be there tho.

Good to see you still have those wheels too. I sweated my *** off that night trying to get them to you.
