I have done it every time with keeping the hood on, and I have had my manifold off and on about 6 times. The only time I took my hood off was when I was doing the motor. For me, theres plenty of room

I took the hood off to do a clutch master cylinder. But then again im 5 10 300 pounds so any extra space counts.

lift the hood and see if you have room to work without bumping into the hood
If you need to take it off its just 4 bolts, and two clips (hood struts).
On man can put and hood on/off.

Done it numerous times.

When I was new and trying to find out what the oovi was as well, searching didn't get me anywhere, all I found were hundreds of threads with people casually talking about the 00vi, only after reading like 20 or 30 threads did I get the hint and catch on.

Anyway, the 00vi is the variable intake manifold off the 2000 or 2001 Maxima with the VQ30-DEK engine. The power gains in the upper end are amazing.
