Significance of the C-clip on the drivers side axle
Just curious, how significant is the c-clip that goes on the drivers side axle? The passenger side doesn't seem to need one.
My drivers side axle took a large sledge hammer to remove, and I am finding that it is now VERY difficult to get back in. Since the halfshaft will be wedged between the wheel hub and the transmission, I can't see it going anywhere.
Can I just discard this c-clip and put the axle in without it?

Without the C-clip the axle would be able to slide in and out freely. It will leak, and it could also cause some premature wear on your output shaft as well. Just bend them down a little bit if you are having problems putting it back in.
Not having the c-clip will make your axle slide out and will probably leave you stranded. If not, it'll just grind the teeth down on both the axle and final drive gear which will probably run 1500 or so in repairs.
Advice: Keep the c-clip on, put some grease on it to keep it centered.

You using your old diff ??? You might be better off replacing the axle with a new one. It shouldn't be that hard to remove or put back in. It could be that the teeth on the axle are damaged thus making it hard to remove / reinstall. Raxles FTW! But ... I know time is on the esence to you so ... Autozone.
Well, I got it all figured out. The C-clip was just too wide. I took it off the axle and with some pliers just closed it up a bit, then put it back on the axle. The axle went right in no problems at all. I just jiggled it a bit and used quite a bit of force, but it was all by hand. No sledgehammer used this time.
I will be in like 15 minutes. I went to Wallmart and get some cheap *** Supertech GL5 transmission oil. I figure since I just had it apart and rebuilt it, there will be **** inside the case even though I tried my best to clean it all. So I think I will just run this cheap stuff in the transmission for about a day or two, then flush it out and put my good GL4 in. But, other than that, its completely back together, wheels on the car, battery sexured and everything.
Look, what you and your battery do is YOUR business ... ROFL

Glad it's all together. I hope it drives out ok and you don't find any other parts when you move your car. See, doing that job is not that bad once it's all done.

Good job, hope I helped a little anyway. Cheers mate!

Yea ... I told him that too mtral, but I didn't mention it this thread becasue he said he was going to run it a couple days and flush .... not sure that would hurt it, but if you didn't flush Modena - it will indeed eat the brass.
Should always put in a new c-clip when putting back the axle. Old ones tend to "spread", making it difficult to put it back in. Passenger side doesnt have or need one because it is secured into the tranny by the support bracket, not allowing it to move in or out.
