Starting issues

Starting issues

I've gotta 97 Maxima, and it starts weird, When its on acc. and i try to start it it wont even click. But when its on off, I've gotta turn it real fast for it to start.
any ideas?

Sounds like an ignition switch issue. Take the covers off to expose the switch, and turn the switch itself using the key or a screwdriver. If it starts every time, you probably have a little slop between the flange on the key cylinder and the slot in the ignition switch. I fixed that by putting a little piece of electrical tape in the slot on the switch, so the flange fits in more tightly.

If it doesn't start any better by turning the switch itself, the switch may be bad. You'll need to start testing by checking for voltage at the contacts on the switch. I don't remember which terminals are which. You should be able to tell from the FSM, or do a search--there's been a lot about ignition switches lately.

Yeah, I think a lot of us have replaced ignition switches unnecessarily. I replaced one and it didn't fix the problem. I finally thought to try the tape, and it's been fine since the beginning of the year.
