Is a 96 stock system the same as a 97?

No 97 is a hair longer ~3 inches

Yes, its a bit longer due to the rear bumper differences. Also, the 95-96's have its rear O2 sensor in the Cat. 97-99 have it in the midpipe after the cat.

imo i think the tail pipe looks better when it sticks out past the bumper a little.
