I had to go through a rigmarole getting my plugs at Autozone. Of course I decided to go on the day when their dumbest employee happened to be working.

I was looking for good plugs but didn't want to break the bank (obviously), so I decided on Autolite double plats (I know.....).

The man came back with coppers. I looked at the box, "Are you sure these are it?" (being in a decent mood, I didn't want to be an *******...) "Yeah, that's them." They even had a different part number. I took one out of the box, and sure enough the numbers matched up and it even had a copper tip. "But it says copper on the box, I wanted platinums." Without skipping a beat the man replied, "Yeah, that's what they're made of."

After a bit more goading he finally went back to check again, and actually came back with platinums (not the doubles I wanted, but I was tired of it).

To add insult to injury, he even asked if I needed anything else like wires, cap, or rotor...

So long story short, I'm a cheapass with Autolite Platinums. And I'm curious to know what Autozone's qualifications for hiring are.

NGK coppers.

Way I look at it is the plats cost ~$10 a piece and last 60K. I'll just buy the coppers at $2 a piece and change them every 30K. Spend only $24 over the course of 60K miles instead of $60. Stronger spark, and I come out ahead money wise.

I just bought NGK Platinum G-Power's. They were $10 for 2 but i think it was a good choice. When I took out the ones in the car, all 3 of the front plugs were covered with oil and the passenger side one in the back. What causes this to happen?
I noticed a little difference when i took it for a run, however at the same time I installed a CAI....lol

Leaking plug tube seals. You've gotta pull the valve covers to replace them, so just grab a valve cover gasket set.

I run NGK platinum in most of our cars. Baja Turbo, SVX, and Maxima. I run Champion double plats in our Discovery because they work well in it.

NGK Iridium IX!!! They're $8/plug but you can tell the difference as soon as you start it up. the engine runs smoother, especially when accelerating

Is your car stock? I thought you don't get any performance gains using iridiums unless you are boosted. I'm at 60k and was wondering if there is anything better than stock replacements. BTW I live like 5 miles down 46 from you.

Only NGK
Have used both NGK V-Power (std. Copper $1.99, 30k mi) and NGK G-Power (Platinum tip $2.79, 60k mi). No discernable difference in performance. Don't have to change plugs as often with the Platinums and they're also less expensive per mile.

Where's the best place to get the spark plugs? I want what's supposed to be in there. The (6) ngk pfr5g-11 are $70 shipped on ebay. I have seen prices listed on the forum ranging from $8-$12.

you can get the plugs at any local auto store. 6953 is the stock number at Advance for the V-Power coppers. I believe they all are pre-gapped. I think it's .044. I can't remember.

If people are having problems with other brands besides NGK why do people have no problems using copper plugs? Is there a difference in the heat range in a copper plug versus a platinum plug?

What do you mean? Copper vs platinum, people have no problems with NGKs. But the metal is irrelevant when you're comparing to other brands, specifically Bosch.

Why use platinum if copper works? Is the life and price of the plug the only difference? Since copper is a different material would it have a different heat range than the platinum plug?

People use the platinum because that's what was originally in the car. Copper is just fine, stronger spark, and it's cheaper, just don't last as long.

Platinum G's
One set of Platinum G's ($2.79 ea) will save you about $7 over 60k miles since you have to buy two sets of the Copper V's ($1.99 ea); since they last 30k miles. (Prices from Advance Auto.)
